    Hey guys,
    I just reinstalled windows by following these instructions:
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=109447
    I tried to reinstall mediadirect using the cd provided but it failed. A message appeared saying this system is not supported by this reinstallation dvd. Setup will now exit. What do I do to get mediadirect working again?
    Cheers :)

    Those instructions dont cover mediaDirect from what I can see.

    Follow my instructions below; they are good for any Dell system with mediaDirect and advise.

    I think the problem may be that the disk I have says that it is to reinstall MediaDirect on an Inspiron 1520 machine, but I have a Vostro 1500 machine (I know they are pretty much the same system, but it probably detects that it is not the correct machine).

    Media Direct allows you to view DVD media on your laptop without booting windows, using less battery. You would get there by pressing the Media Direct button.
    I did not reinstall it on my 6400, kinda wish I did thogh.
    Whatever you do if you have Media Direct 3.anything you must first run that disc in order to partiton your hard drive correctly. I wouda thought flamenco's process would do but if you wanna try another way here's a link to someone who did it by the book on an XP machine. When they did it it also diddent work for them but they found a solution that worked. This solution/process may work for you too. Be sure to scroll down this page to where it says installling Media Direct 3.0. Beware not to confuse the process with the 2.0 version as 2.0 is a completely different animal that does not partition the hard drive.

    The entire post the link above takes you to is super and I thank the author.
    I only wish I read it before I installed my new operating system! :)

    I had same problem. The cd is made for inspiron and will not work on vostro. You need to rip cd to iso and change the name in info file to vostro. Also there are two zip files named inspiron 15.... and you will need to change the name as well. After just save iso and burn a bootable cd. Remember that you cant edit info file inside iso, you need to extract it then edit and put it back to iso.

    1. You need software (MagicISO, PowerISO, UltraISO, any soft that can create and edit ISO)
    2. Rip the disc to iso file.
    3. Open iso file, open DellKit folder and extract Platform file.
    4. Open extracted file in notepand and change system ID to "Vostro 1500"
    5. Save file and put it back to iso replacing old file
    6. Open inspiron 1520 folder and change name of the folder to Vostro 1500 and both zip files to Vostro 15001 and 15002.
    7. Save iso file and burn it as a bootable cd
    8. Install mediadirect before and after vista
    9. download update from dell website

    You need to reformat again and remember to install sata driver before installing vista.

    Ok. I hope i get it right the first time round. Can u please check the following?

    Platform.ini should read:

    [WindowsMD3]
    Path = "WindowsMD3"

    [TotalSystem]
    Total = 1

    [SystemID]
    1 = "Vostro 1500"

    [WindowsBDPack]
    Path = "WindowsMD3\BDPack"

    What about the folder:

    D:\Inspiron 1520

    Should that be renamed to anything?

    And inside...

    "Inspiron 15201.exe" goes to "Vostro 15001.exe"
    "Inspiron 15202.exe" goes to "Vostro 15002.exe"

    i'm not sure about nero but it should be ok, platform is ok now you need to check if the platform in iso was replaced. Just open it with notepad. You need to rename all, Inspiron 1520 folder and both Inspiron zip files to Vostro.

    Hello,

    I just registered here to say thanks for the solution. I reinstalled my windows on my Vostro 1500 after following the usual hard drive preparation with the original Mediadirect disc for Inspiron 1520. After that I was having nightmares about accidentally pressing the mediadirect button and ruining my hard drive, because mediadirect wouldn't install (wrong model).
    I used the included roxio to rip the iso, extracted with winrar and burned a normal data disc again with roxio after the filename changes you described. And it worked!!!
    A thousand thanks from a desperate fellow Vostro owner and keep it up in this very nice forum!!!

    PS: I also changed the filenames in the languages folder, perhaps not necessary but it doesn't hurt...

    Hi all!

    I am having this exact problem too. I have not attempted the solution yet....

    Does anyone know if Dell offer a Vostro version of the MediaDirect DVD, rather than having to create your own one?

    Also has doing this solution actually caused problems for anyone?

    Thanks
