Everything was going perfectly, until I tried to update Dell MediaDirect. First of all, after updating MediaDirect, it still wanted updates. It didn't know it had been updated. Then I turned off the computer to see if maybe something had to be done in the out-of-Windows version. It ran fine liek normal, so I exited it, and hit the normal power button, and it booted to MediaDirect, not Vista. No matter what I do, it boots to MediaDirect. Any ideas?

Thats what i thought would happen if you tried reinstalling media direct. Unfortunately, when you reinstalled your system, then media direct, your computer stopped recognizing which power button you clicked. Therefore, you really have one power button. The solution to this is simple- install vista from the DVD once again. BUT, then do not install media direct.

It works fine if I don't do the update. I dont' want to have a silly button with a picture of a home on it do nothing.

whoa... wait a sec... so without the update it boots into Vista?
If it is like that, then problem solved.
And anyways, zi understand you, because that would suck, but you are not right about the button doing nothing. The system recognises both buttons as the same thing after reinstall (dont know why) so if you reinstall vista, both buttons will boot into vista
But hey, if it works fine without the update, then problem solved, no?

Well, okay, it won't do nothing. But it will do nothign special.

Okay, I think you're not following.

The MediaDirect DVD provided had partitioning software on it. Your supposed to partition your harddrive with it before you install Vista. So, I do that, then install Vista, then all my drivers, then MediaDirect. Here, everything works. I can run MediaDirect in Vista, and if I turn off the computer, the MediaDirect button will booth straight to MediaDirect, and the normal power button to Vista.

But in Vista, MediaDirect says there's an update available I should get. So, I install the update, and MediaDirect still thinks there's an update available. AT this point, if I boot into MediaDirect at all, I'm stick with it.

I just don't see hwo I'm the only one with this problem.

Sorry, at this point, I cant help you. I have no Idea what is going on in this case. I would try not installing the update in vista, but installing it in mediadirect (since you said that media direct knows when there are updates) but that is just my advice, I cannot help you, because I did not open my 1520 yet :(

    i had that problem.

press the mediadirect button and it should boot into vista, and everything should be normal after that.

Then just don't install the update, right? Then everything will work fine. Unless I'm missing something?

dell1520, you can only update MediaDirect within the Windows version, not the bootable one.

garsh0p, I'm such an idiot. I already reformated. I'll just go through the whole process again and hope that works. Does MediaDirect still prompt you to update?

odin243, that is also an option, but I'm crazy and can't stand somethinf prompting me to update, but then not doing so.

    Hope.

Maybe the update is in more than one piece. I should have checked the file sizes; see if it wanted me to get the same update or a different one.

Yeah, it's the Bitlocker thing. When you said you used MediaDirect button to boot to Vista, then everything was normal, did the buttons work correctly then? And did it get rid of the supposid Bitlocker(Something neither of us have I believe) problem?

    That's unsettling.

But did it happen after you tried to update it, or just the first time you tried it?

I emailed tech support. I won't try the update again until I get a response.

Media Direct is really shi**y and very badly written. It force formats the disk to make sure that its partition is the first one although it sits right in the end of the disk. It just can't live with the fact that its last partition on the disk, although it is allocated its sectors in the end.

Very annoying if you want to dual boot with linux and stuff!

And yeah, it screwed up partitions and finally gave that bitlocker error!

Okay, now it's not the update that does it. In installed it, never ran it in Windows, booted it, ran Windows, booted it, ran Windows, ran it on Windows, then booted it, and it gave me the error and mixed up the buttons. Pressing the MediaDirect button unmixes it, but any time I boot it, it mixes it again.

At least now every time it fails, I don't have ot reformat. I'm gonna keep looking for a fix. I'll post it here if I find one.

Same here. If there is a fix, it's still crummy software. I wish I could reporgram the button to do something else, though. It'd be cool if it could start Media Center.
