I'd like to upgrade the memory in my Dell Inspiron 1501 from 1gb to 2gb. I checked the memory with Everest, and it claims the memory is DDR2-667mhz.
I checked the memory on the Dell site for the 1501, and they're saying PC6400 800mhz.
Newegg is offering memory for the 1501 PC2 4200 533mhz.
I'm getting a little confused, as I thought one had to match the speed with the original chips and PC type. Not so? Which to buy?

your machine is compatable with:
PC2-4200 533mhz
PC2-5300 667mhz
PC2-6400 800mhz(this will automatically downclock to 667mhz so I don't recommend it)
If the deal at newegg is good, I'd go for it.
so in short you don't have to match the origonal ram. -
Alrighty. Thanks for the speedy reply. I'll be a-callin' Newegg soon.

Just so you know, if you put in a slower stick, the faster one will downclock to match the slower one in order to run in dual channel. So, if you have a 667MHz stick and install a 533MHz stick, then they will both end up running 533MHz.
Memory for 1501 - what speed?
