Hi there, noobie here. I ordered a Vostro 1500 7/11 and according to Fedex, it will finally be here tomorrow morning.

Anyways, I currently have an old Toshiba M55 notebook running on 256MB single stick DDR2 PC2-4200 (just opened her to confirm). She also has an empty slot. Now, to my understanding, the Vostros run on PC2-5300 RAM. I ordered my Vostro with 1GB of RAM (512MBx2). What I plan to do it yank one of the sticks out of the Vostro, and stick it in my Toshiba, making it run at 768 MB. I would run down to Fry's and buy a 1GB PC2-5300 stick and stick it in the Vostro, making it run at 1.5GB.

What do you guys think? Would the two computers work alright? No dual-channel of course, but I'm fine with that. I ordered my Vostro with WinXP, so 1.5GB should be plenty. I don't want to open the keyboard, so I'll leave that one 512MB in there.

    Thanks.

Thanks for the quick reply. Yes, that I don't mind. I just want to bump the amount of RAM in the old Toshiba. I'm concerned with the reliability of running this setup.

Yes, it will work. The PC2-5300 will just run at a lower speed.

LOL I was just re-reading your post and editing my response to better fit... but anyways, it'll work, there shouldn't be any reliability issues, so long as it is all reasonble quality RAM.
