The Inspiron 1720 comes with two slots (One under the keyboard, one in back). When you order 1GB from dell, it will come with a 512MB stick in each slot. I would recommend buying 2 X 1GB sticks, as it will save money and allow you to use dual-channel, for a slight performance boost. Instructions on replacing the memory can be found in the owners manual.

Do you think it would be better to just leave 1 512 stick in, and add a single 2g stick in? 2.5 gb seem to be better then just 2 gbs.

The difference between 2 GB dual channel and 2.5 GB single channel would be minimal. The 2.5 GB would probably take the lead, but the difference would be hardly noticeable. It depends how much extra it costs for the 2 GB stick. You can make the decision yourself: a little more cash for a slight performance increase? (And remember, the difference would be VERY slight). However, if in the future you wanted to upgrade the memory again, a single 2 GB stick would allow you to add another 2GB stick for 4 GB of dual channel memory (3.5 GB in 32 bit systems) instead of 3 GB of single channel.

Awesome advice, thanks! I'll go with the single 2 gb stick then, it's nearly the same price as 2 - 1 gig sticks, so like you said in the future I could get another 2 gig stick and have 4 gigs. :)
