    Is this the kind of memory u need for a Vostro 1700?
    Newegg has 4GB (2x2GB) A-DATA DDR2-667 laptop SoDIMM dual channel memory kit for $70 - $15 rebate = $55 with free shipping. Thanks SP33DFR34K

    I'd like to purchase the memory now so that when the laptop arrives I can upgrade it to 4gb quick.

    Yep, almost any DDR2-667 So-dimm will work ...Also to use/see all of the 4GB , you will need a 64-bit OS(~3GB will be seen with a 32-bit OS which is plenty for most people).

    I'm going to just be using vista 32 bit home premium. would i be better off just getting 2gb?

    If i purchase memory that's faster than what the laptop needs, it will downclock the memory speed right?

    Nope - the chipset (Intel PM965) only supports 667MHz RAM. You may get slightly better timings though.

    Will the system downclock the speed of the memory if i installed 800mhz memory into the system?

    YES ;)

    The chipset only supports 667MHz DDR2 RAM so it will downclock the 800MHz RAM to 667MHz. The 800MHz RAM may have better timings when ran at 667MHz than 667MHz RAM though - not sure you'd notice unless you benchmarked it.
