Hey readers just wanted to let you know that I have an XPS M1330 with the worst whine ever. It was the kind of whine that came from below the express card slot area. I recieved two other replacements from dell but they were even worse than my first orginal notebook. Since I went through all that trouble for two replacements just to keep my orginal in the end, Dell upgraded me from a T7500 to a T9300. The Dell technician came today and installed the penryn and flashed the bios. After an hour on the 1330 I can say that now my 1330 is whine free even when turning off RMClock. But if I turn off the bluetooth I can start to hear it but I have to listen close. So for all the people that were wondering, the penryn upgrade did fix the whine for me. :D

The bluetooth whine is loud enough for me. So from my point of view the whine problem is apparently not fixed.

Interesting, but still not worth the cost of upgrading :)

My temp reached 65C when I was watching a movie on media player classic at full brightness. If I dont do anything at all at full brightness my temp stays around 45C. I think it is normal becasue I compared it to my merom replacement that I still have and the temps seem the same doing the same tasks.

Snesly Wipes I remember someone describing it as a Morse Code which is the perfect word to desribe it, I'm sure someone has posted the sound on their dell on youtube.

Does anyone know any good programs to test their cpu?

Screen brightness doesn't have anything to do with processor temp...

3dmark or pcmark would be good. Also wPrime are good benchmarks for your cpu to see temp peaks.

I'd rather keep the $400 and run a free application.

Still, bravo to Intel for finally fixing that damn problem..

i put a soft pad underneath the m1330 and the noise is less noticeable. Make you don't block the fan though...

Merom to Penryn and my whine is actually louder. However, seems less frequent. My Merom version used to whine continually on battery power. I have a T8300.

    It gets relatively warm too...

I'm going to keep this version as everything else is good...

    I think... :S

I specifically asked Dell reps and they said they have fixed this issue before I ordered my m1330. This seems disappointing.

Yep... I waited a month for Penryn in the hope that the Whine would disappear.... it is disappointing. However, as before there will be some machines that whine and some that don't...

I've waited too long to try another swap.. and this really doesn't whine that frequently...

yeah, it sucks that penryn did not fix the whine issue, but it is a little more bearable now.

By humm do you mean the sound? haha :) because that is normal. It is the hard drive spinning just below your left hand palm rest. If you put your hand down on the left hand palm rest you can feel a slight vibration which is normal.

I think so as well.. a very very very gentle vibration that's hard to even notice will be the hard drive and/or fan. You would have to keep you palm gently on the machine to even feel that its there. Anything more than that is probably not normal (ie. if you can actually see it vibrating, etc)..

I did what Flemenko advised giving it to some folks at work to try
and they felt it as I did.. so I'm going to replace it.
I pray the next one will be my keeper...

I like my system....except a little whine near and there. i dont notice any vibration..maybe because i got the slower harddrive..i am not too sure.

Well I can't see it vibrating but it is so there when I hold the system I feel it all over... less than the other vibrating though.
I'm going to reseat the hard drive tonight just to see what happens.
    As suggested by some
