I recieved a message from dell just now to update my bios,i have not done this since new, what is the latest update and are there any issues with it that i need to know before doing this.

Which model notebook do you have?
-
The latest BIOS should be on the Dell website, under your notebook model. The newer BIOS don't really have anything wrong with them, and it is normally a good idea to update if you have problems with your notebook. Be careful wehn updating though, and make sure you understand what you have to do, as flashing the BIOS wrongly, can render your notebook useless.

I noticed that some bios upgrades are considered critical for some reason
I have the m1210 and as you can see Bios A01 and A02 are critically urgent which is probably the case with RadioDude's model

I do have the m1210 and have the original bios, not sure if i should upgrade or not.

I just ran belarc and said that i have bios a03 which is not a critical upgrade
-
I believe mine is either A03 or A04 and so far I haven't taken the time to upgrade it. If it isn't broke...don't fix it.

Exactly!!!
