Microsoft has finished Windows Vista Service Pack 1, the big bundle of fixes and updates for the 1-year-old version of the PC operating system. During a presentation to analysts this morning, Microsoft Chief Executive Steve Ballmer said both Windows Vista Service Pack 1 and Windows Server 2008 were released to the manufacturing process today and will start being available to customers in March

"In mid-March, we will release Windows Vista SP1 to Windows Update (in English, French, Spanish, German and Japanese) and to the download center on microsoft.com. Customers who visit Windows Update can choose to install Service Pack 1. If Windows Update determines that the system has one of the drivers we know to be problematic, then Windows Update will not offer SP1. Since we know that some customers may want to update to SP1 anyhow, the download center will allow anyone who wants to install SP1 to do so.

In mid-April, we will begin delivering Windows Vista SP1 to Windows Vista customers who have chosen to have updates downloaded automatically. That said, any system that Windows Update determines has a driver known to not update successfully will not get SP1 automatically. As updates for these drivers become available, they will be installed automatically by Windows Update, which will unblock these systems from getting Service Pack 1. The result is that more and more systems will automatically get SP1, but only when we are confident they will have a good experience."

The remaining languages will RTM in April.

Well Vista SP1 RC (release candidate) has been up on MSDN for a while.
I just checked and there is now something called Vista SP1 Beta.

SP1 vista has been re-scheduled to Feb 18th. But now you can download RTM version (same as final) or do some magic trick to force Windows Update to bring it to your PC.

I noticed my boot time was longer after I installed Vista SP1. Otherwise, I really can't say I've noticed anything better/worse.

Vista's boot time is 3 times longer than XP on my other machine. I hate that.

My point wasn't comparing it to XP.....point was that BEFORE installing SP1, my boot time was shorter than AFTER installing SP1.

If you want me to compare boot times between Vista and XP, perceptually I really never noticed that much of a difference.

Yeah, i downloaded the RTM version and installed on my XPS M1210 today, everything is just fine... no better, no worse because i use Windows Update quite frequently. Now, the only different thing is just... SP1.

As you go from the original Vista, this SP1 is much more stable, compabile with 3rd party software, reliable.

You can follow these instructions : http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=216957, that's the quickest way to obtain SP1, especially if you dont have any Rapidshare or Megaupload premium account. But make sure you have at least 7GB Free space on Windows partition and your laptop should be connected to the AC outlet when you're preparing for SP1. These are must.
