Dell sent me a nice coupon for dell outlet and I can get a refurb dell mini 9 with the following specs for $191. Kind of an impulse buy if I get it but i've been wanting a netbook for a while.

    Specs: Inspiron Mini 910
    Intel Atom 1.6
    1 GB ram
    8 GB solid state drive.
    Ubuntu loaded

Is this a good buy or would my $200 be spent better elsewhere. I know I wont be storing anything on an 8gb HD I just want a web browser and something that can do word processing. I haven't really shopped out any netbooks but the price tag kinda caught my eye.

If you're looking for a dirt-cheap bare minimum, then that's not bad at all.

If you get it, expect problems with Ubuntu-My friend got a mini9 with Ubuntu and his wireless didn't work out of the box.
After we installed XP however, it worked just fine.

I'm not knocking the mini9, they are fun little computers. But you WILL want to buy the $20 'international keyboard' if you plan on typing with it. The stock keyboard has a really weird layout.

I dont think the main concern is features, software, etc problems with the Mini 9. It's whether or not a netbook is practical for the OP. Netbooks aren't for everyone. Software problems can be worked around, but if the notebook is too small or doens't have enough power to do what's needed ...

Thanks, yeah I just bought a high powered DTR so I just want something to toy around with and type some notes in school ect. If I get it with Ubuntu I will install XP on my own or 7 if it runs properly. The config I had in my cart was sold within 15 min of me seeing it so I'll have to wait until late at night when they seem to add them. After shopping around this is a good looking little netbook for $200 after I use this coupon.

I think its worth buying, and the great thing is that its perfect for testing out different various operating systems: (XP, Vista, Windows7, uBuntu, and Apple's osx)

There's a dedicated forum for trying different operating systems at

Win7 runs faster than XP (and gets better battery life!) on the atom machines.

I'd spend a bit more money and get a more featured netbook with a bigger drive and larger keyboard if my objective was taking notes. You can buy a new Mini 10 with XP for 299
