What is this? Is this for the cellular network service? On the 1210 its an option for the a/v communication bundle.

Yup , with that on your laptop you can connect to the internet
anytime, anywhere as long as there is an GSM or CDMA network but
you have to pay for the monthly subscription though ;)

like the prodigy says its not exactly "anytime anyplace"....since coverage area is still relatively limited check the cellular provider's broadband coverage map...for now it won't work if you live or are in the sticks...if you're in one of the metro areas you're good to go

Yeah the pricing for it is kinds ridiclous though, like if you already have a cell phone subscription with one of the companies, then unlimited service is $80 a month for mobil broadband. If/when the prices drop I may get it, but untill then I got the A/V package with the antenna, just need a card.

the pricing is consistent with what verizon or cingular currently charge, for example i have to pay $59/month to cingular to get unlimited data for my treo...i'm hoping when dell finally comes out with a cingular expresscard my only additional cost will be for the hardware as i already pay for unlimited data

I have another question: Since I am at college I will have no trouble using the regular intel 3495 network card everywhere and also since I wouldnt use the web cam, is there any reason to get the a/v package?

You'll need the a/v package if you are planning on using Cingluar, Verizon, etc to connect to the net when you are away from college. If you are planning on just using your laptop at home/school with wifi or at hotspots, then you wouldn't need it.

Yet if you go to a hotel or somewhere that does not have internet, and you want to connect to the internet, you'll need the a/v package as well as a cellular provider that can give you service. Basically the a/v package is for users who use their cellular service to get internet when they are away from home/hotspots.

If that's the case, then no because you'll be using your Intel 3945 wireless card to connect to your college wireless network.

Sorry, but your Cingular account is linked to a particular device, not a person. So, if you keep the data plan on your TREO, you'll need another plan for your Dell Expresscard at $59 more per month. It's a drag....

There is only 1 a/v package offered. Its on the first page of configurations right under the choice for Operating System (if i remember right).

I'm not sure about how all of the data plans work. I know that in order to use the internet provided by your cellular service, you do have to have some kind of data plan, which i would think Lancorp is right - where you have to have a data plan for each device.

i KNOW...IT WAS JUST WISHFUL THINKING... I have 3 phones on this account and they all have to pay for data...they just jack the price way up on the treo

I must have misread your earlier post, I thought you were saying one needs the a/v package to connect to the net...

Not really. You must have the a/v package if you plan on using cingular, verizon or any of the cellular services to gain access to the net. I thought I read somewhere or maybe it was a previous post on here that you the a/v package is not something that you can add on once you receive your laptop - in other words, its not user upgradeable, so if you don't get it now, you are out of luck. Again, i'm not 100% if that is true or not.

If you are just using your wifi card/ethernet or dial up, then you don't need the a/v package.

You can always upgrade even if you don't have it built in on your notebook because Dell just release the WWAN express card ;)
