    Hi:

    I searched but did not conclusively find an answer.

    I want to upgrade the E1705 original HDD Hitachi Travelstar 60 GB with the Seagate Momentus 250 GB HDD:

    Seagate Momentus 5400.4 ST9250827AS 250GB 5400 RPM 8MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s Notebook Hard Drive - OEM

    From:

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822148310

    Is it compatible even though it is SATA 3.0 GB/s?

    Newegg wants to sell it to me but they don't want to confirm compatiblity I believe.

    Thanks!

    SATAII is backwards compatabile with SATA I. So your SATAII drive will still work with a SATAI connection.

    Thanks. I kinda figured it would be compatible. Newegg only sells the drives but they have confirmed that they don't know if what they sell will work in any given machine. Being that it is one of the most popular brands, I would have thought they would be only too happy to recommend a compatible drive. Drive solutions WILL tell what is compatible with the E1705 but not what brand HDD it is--and, they're about $50 higher.

    Aah I see. Well NewEgg has excellent customer service, but I think they refrain from technical reccomendations for liability reasons (i.e. them covering returns b/c a csr unknowingly recommended the wrong type)

    How do I know what kind of connection I have?

    ST910021AS = SATA 1.5Gb/s so I assume that's what connection I have. If I get a 7k200 or 7200 Momentus I'll be a bit of a waste?

    Does SATA 3.0Gb/s interface mean Sata2?

    Yes. I went with Tiger Direct as they would confirm compatibility, thereby assuming responsibility if it does not match. I had to down-size capacity, but I didn't really need 250 GB anyway. It would seem that a company selling computer parts would have a "computer" database just chockfull of compatability stuff, though.

    Dell was very good to me. I requested via email all of the mediadirect and powerlink dvds/cds to recover and they sent me all kinds of software, stuff I already had even.

    And apparently the Seagate software DiscWizard comes with partitioning and disc imaging tools so I'm all set.

    SATA 3.0 gb/s = Sata 2

    If you get a 7k200 or 7200.2 Momentus it will not be a waste. As far as I am aware, there are no hard disk drives that can take full advantage of the throughput of SATA II. Thus, you would more than benefit from those drives if you need an increase in capacity/speed.
