Monitoring laptop temperature?

Hi all,
I have a Dell Inspiron E1505, and although I'm sure I have no overheating problems with it, I would like to know how to monitor its temperature. Is there some special hardware I have to install, or is there some software program available that can monitor the temperature (how would a program do this)?

I don't really have any idea about this, so thanks for any help.

Thanks for the link, but that one only monitors hard drive temperature. Is there a program to monitor CPU temperature too?

Just curious, but how do software programs monitor the temperature? I would think that there needs to be some hardware to sense the temperature.

Also, what are the safe temperatures for CPU and hard drive? I read that 60 degrees Celsius should be max for hard drive. Is this true, and what about CPU?

I found Notebook Hardware Control on another thread and it seems to work fine, does anyone else use it? One thing about it though is that whenever I start the program it dims my screen and I have to turn brightness back up. Is this normal, and why does it do this?

Hmm..I downloaded MobileMeter, but whenever I run it I get this error message: "Failed to communicate with the ACPI driver"

 

that program works by communicating with acpi, i have never seen this problem before, but it seems your motherboard doesn't support ACPI? anyway, i am very sure it works on Dell inspiron 6400 Centrino Duo or inspiron 1501 turion x2

 

I have used the "fangui" program for over a year. Works fine and provides a lot of control over the fans and visability to temps. I also have the notebook sitting on a notebook fan cooler. Google fangui and you should be able to locate it. Was done by a great guy in Germany. I think Diefer is his name.

 

kotrtim, I don't know what the problem is, could it be caused by some settings on the laptop? I have a Dell E1505 which is the same as Inspiron 6400.

Does anyone know what could be the problem? I get the message "Failed to communicate with ACPI driver" when I run MobileMeter. But Notebook Hardware Control seems to work fine. Is there a problem with my motherboard? I don't notice any problem with my laptop in every day use so far (though only had it for a few days), so I don't know what the problem could be.

 

Try Notebook Control Monitor. I have it on my old compaq.

 

There is nothing wrong with your motherboard, something goes wrong with the ACPI driver, maybe it is disable? well, i don't know how to enable it though. Mobile Meter doesn't work in Vista!!!

 

i8kfangui is a good temperature monitoring program. It works very well on my dell latitude d610.

I agree, this program is the best for dell laptops. It has profiles and more letting you control the way the fans should behave on different temperature ranges.

 

Thanks, I downloaded i8kfangui, and enabled all the sensors except for the hard drive. The option for "Read hard drive temperatures" is disabled for some reason. How come I can't enable this option? (NHC reads my hard drive temperature fine)

I also went to "Show Sysinfo" -> "HD info", but there's nothing in the drop down list for "Select hard drive". This is probably related to why I can't enable the "Read hard drive temperatures" option. How come i8kfangui can't read my hard drive info?

Yeah it shows a lot more temperatures than all the other programs I've tried.

speedfan isn't compatible with Vostro 1400, I8KFAN disabled wi-fi catcher in power off.

 

I to am interested in monitoring my notbooks viatals and was planning on using i8kfangui untill i found out that it disables wifi catcher in power off mode on Vostros (assumung all as it did on the 1400 and i am waiting on a 1500) is there any way to correct this or does anyone know of a good program that works for the new Vostros with Vista?
