My 3.5-year-old Inspiron 6000 is really slowing down. I really only use it for Web browsing, iTunes, Word, etc.

Is it nearing the end of its lifespan, or will more RAM (currently have 512MB) speed things up and keep the computer running well for a while?

If I'm due for a new laptop anyway, I'd rather just replace it now before it crashes or something.

Getting a new laptop would be a good idea, though 2 GB of RAM would only cost you about $20, my computer (check my sig) is specced similar to yours and it still runs fine =) Although I am getting a new one this year

anyways a cheap upgrade option would be this

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820134687

    or

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820146517

I think you will see quite a big performance increase for $20 =) although, you probably should upgrade in a year or two

My guess is that a fresh install of Windows will cure the problem. It wouldn't hurt to up the memory, but you can perform those tasks with 512MB.

I would opt for more RAM, it always helps out if you run many programs at once.

I got the same old machine :) if I were you I would look out for a new one.. Sooner or later some component will be at the end of its lifetime and you will have to buy another one. It's just lost money. A format would help you for a couple of months thoug but I'm afraid he/she is going to die on you within this year..
