People have said about the inacuracies of dell's websites tracking system, claiming that automated phone services and other things provide much more accurate results.

However, i cannot find such an automated service. Anyone care to inform me on how to get the most accurate, up-to-date progress report?

    I Jonathan,

Call 1800-WWW-DELL (1-800-999-3355) and say "Check Order Status". Then say or key in your order number of Dell Purchase ID and you should get your status.

    Good Luck!

    This is US.

If you go to the main uk number and goto customer services there is a status check there

    Cheers

    I tried this, and got

Your payment has been recieved, and your order is progressing.

Does this mean that it's in production?

After you hear that you can press the number 2, then 2 again to speak to an agent about your order, just quote them your order number.

However, the truth is that the online status will tell you the minute it goes into production, boxing / shipped. It might say its in pre-production now and on the phone they will say its really in production but from my experience they just lie on the phone so you don't cancel.

I did an experiment when I ordered an m1330 recently, rang them up 2 days after placing the order and what a surprise they said it was in production while the site said pre-production. 9 days later, rang them up, it's in production they say, while the website says pre-production. Then 2 days later the website says it's in production and the same day it had shipped. So they obviously chat rubbish. Just look at the website.

I find the website info is way off.

My order was showing pre production for a week despite it being in production the entire time. It also wasn't giving an estimated delivery date, and when it did show the EDD the date was way off.

CSR quoted me an EDD a full week before what the site was showing.

Morale of the story, talk to a CSR, yes they may be bs'ing you, but they'll be more accurate then the website order status.

Ok, I agree with you there. But the website will tell you the minute it goes into boxing or has shipped, at least in the UK. Who cares if it's in production for 2 weeks when it really says pre-production . The fact is people want to know when it's about to come not the difference between it being in so called 'production' or 'pre-production' besides, it doesn't take 2 weeks to build a laptop and they are obviously waiting for parts so they can build it in 1 or 2 days.

"it doesn't take 2 weeks to build a laptop"? guess it's just my bad luck then, cos I placed my order on 18th Feb and ESD was 6th Mar right until this morning it changed to 8th Apr. So apparently it takes Dell 1 and a half month to build one laptop. Mine is an UK order of a Vostro 1700 btw.

What I meant was the laptop isn't actually being built right now, they are waiting for parts, once they have them they build it very quickly. So it might say it's in 'production' but they are still waiting for parts.
