I try to connect mouse and keyboard to Dell D610 via a 4 port mini USB hub and realize the PC take 5 minutes to recognize mouse and keyboard. Anybody know why ?

If I connect mouse and keyboard directly to PC (don't use USB hub) PC recognizes them immediately. Thanks

Might be an issue with the hub, have you tried it with other machines?

First I think the hub is defective so I try with other hubs but I get the same problem. D610 uses USB 2.0 port, does the hub need to be USB 2.0 ? (I think all the ones I tried are USB 1.1). Does this matter ?

That doesn't matter. The 2.0 hubs will use 1.1 speed if it needs to. Could be a power issue too. The hub might not be getting enough power, try it on a desktop if you have one and see if you get the same problem.

I have seen USB hubs cause alot of issues on systems. Recently I had a XPS Gen1 that a customer was complaining of "over heating" and "studdering" preformance. It turned out to be the USB hub.

Check if you get the "slow recognition" effect if your laptop is connected to the AC Adapter (plugged in). If you still have that slow recognition effect then the HUB is probably malfunctioning.

As far as the USB verion, 1.1 & 2.0, you don't have to worry about the compatibility. As far as the issue you are talking about it would not have any effect.

All the hubs I tried so far are non-powered hubs. Let's me try it with a powered hub. Good idea ! Thank you guys ...

I was refering to making sure that your laptop was plugged in, but trying a different hub that recieves it's power from a wall socket isn't a bad idea either.
