I just got a new E1705, about the same specs as Deadbolt360. After reformatting and installing xp, I installed all the drivers from the dell website except for video (XtremeG drivers instead), repaired MediaDirect, and installed the Soundblaster add-on and McAfee security center. I also looked at how to optimize a notebook and did most of the tips there, including disabling excess startup processes, defragmenting, disabling system restore, and running TuneXP.

Now the problem: when I leave the computer idle, the mouse cursor blinks between the normal cursor and the cursor with the hourglass every few seconds. I checked the taskmanager and under processes, and every few seconds three programs run: lsass.exe, rundll32.exe, and explorer.exe. McAfee and Spybot S&D found nothing.

    Any help would be appreciated.

those 3 processes are normal. Are all of your processors on one process, or are they spread out between the two processors?
