I agree. Whilst the effect that they produce now is a classy novelty, you aren't actually aware which button is which in a low-light environment until you've already pressed it; and the presence of the backlit keys on the rest of the board does make such a subtle 'feature' across the touch strip a little farcical in comparison.

An oversight that I hope will be addressed by the time the rumoured/leaked 'Studio XPS' notebooks land.

There has to be a way to hack that functionality into the laptop. I would be willing to work on it (programming, etc), but I have no idea where to start looking! It;s such a weird problem. I would think that it shouldn't be too had to do, as they scan across when the computer boots, so there is some limited control functionality available, however I think it's in the BIOS, which I am not really willing to hack into. Too much risk involved. Anyone with suggestions?

Ideally it would glow the other way around in a low-light environment. They would remain blue, but fade out when pressed. I think this reversal of functionality should only come into play when the backlit keyboard has been turned on.

Therefore keeping the elegance of the original formatting during the day but with the added convenience of being able to distinguish the keys in the dark. What do you think?

an alternate way for it to work would be for all of them to be lit....and when you tap one with your finger......it stays lit while the rest dim out for a sec then back to all of them being lit

but I want to wait till I have mine in my hands before I decide which setup would be most convenient......i have a poor imagination :D

Or Vise Versa. Have all of them lit up and when you touch one only the one you touch goes dark.I would be happy with either as long as the touch strip is lit up. I think dell should address this problem.

I think it would be nice to be able to program a button combination to press to get them all to light up briefly. Like fn + F1 or something. Maybe people who have ordered a backlit keyboard can just have it light up when they turn on the backlit part.

Just having them lit dimly and then when pushed light fully up is another idea...and if this deals with the BIOS I really don't want to mess with it! It's a little scary working with it...

^^^AFAIK, its not possible to tweak it in BIOS. This feature just doesn't exist

The buttons have at least 2 brightness levels and would require driver support to affect the volume of the laptop speakers and eject the dvd drive anyway.

I suspect that Dell may actually be able to fix this in something as trivial as a driver update. When my Studio 17 finally arrives (Hell is getting chilly and looks to be finally freezing over). I'll have a quick look at the drivers and see what they are doing.
