Initially I had 1 LAN icon in the notification area of my I6000 but over my first 24 hours of use and several restarts, I've accumulated 3 of them. I've hidden them for now, but anyone know why multiple icons are accumulating?

You can just hover over them to see what they are. Furthermore, go to network connections to see all of you connections under "LAN or Highspeed" network connections, you can right click and select properties and turn on/off if you want it to show in the notifications area or remove one you don't think should be there (i.e. you put a wireless card in for the heck of it and then took it out and now it has an icon)

you might have a firewire port. I can't remember if the 6000 has a firewire connection, but on the 9300 systems, the firewire port adds a network connection and icon.

On my 9300 there is one for wired one for wireless and one for bluetooth. I believe that you can disable each in the particular connection properties.

They each say "Local Area Network" with nothing or a 1, 2, 3 after them as they each appear. There are multiple icons on the notification bar until I hid them all and selected not to be notified of connection changes. I have used only WiFi, the "Wireless Network Connection" in my Network Connections to connect on my Airport network. The LAN connection that keeps making multiple icons is the Ethernet port. The BT, WiFi, and Firewire are all separate and not making multiple copies. Any one have this particular issue fixed other than simply disabling? I guess I'm trying to figure out if it's telling me something or I need to fix some issue?

Ok, first again: Try Disabling all of them except for Wifi. The only one you should see is the computer with a signal going to the right.
Go into network connections, and DELETE all of the ones with 1,2,3 behind them since those were created uncorrectly. Or you tryed setting up internet a couple times. But when its all done, you should have 4.

nickspohn, thanks for the help. I actually already deleted them except for the original (got rid of everything with a number after it). I chose to hide the original LAN icon, but WiFi is still displayed. My lingering confusion is why the OS is creating more and more of them. When I delete them, more appear or are created, despite the fact that I'm not connecting to a traditional LAN, only the home WiFi network... which I believe is not the same thing  I'm just wondering if others are finding that they have multiple LAN icons that continue to appear (even after they delete or hide them, new numbers... 2, 3, etc... start to appear)? Perhaps there is an application I have installed that is creating these... are there any known culprits? The annoyance is that even if I hide or delete existing ones, new ones appear in the notification bar area and have popup bubbles associated with them... I suppose I can just turn off signal strength notifications to get rid of that... just curious if there is a "fix" for it above and beyond the interventions I mentioned and that have been suggested? Thanks for all the great feedback so far.
