...clunking noise. Just started doing it last evening. After being idle for just a few minutes I hear a clunk when the drive starts up. Not a good sign. Anyone else have this issue?

I had the Hitachi 80GB 7k100. It is not unusual for it to be clicky, but a clunking sound does seem odd. Perhaps Dell will replace it.

I agree. I've never heard that sound on any drive (laptop or desktop) before. I hope it lasts 'til I get an image made.

I agree. It is perfectly normal to hear a clicking noise, as the head moves back and forth, but a clunking noise sounds like sonething is touching something else. See what Dell say, and try to make some back ups as well, just incase something happens.

I have the same issue, and same drive. Clunks go away if i turn it off, or sometimes on their own. It happened 3-4 times tops.

I changed some of the power settings and haven't heard it for a day. I'll wait and see. I created a backup image so I'm not too worried.
