Is this normal? If it is, why did Dell choose to leave the backlight on when you close the lid/screen of the notebook? Seems like a waste of energy to me.

You can disable that in power settings under control panel where it says "When I close the lid of my laptop...."

Well I use Windows XP on my 1420 and that feature doesn't exist in XP.. typically laptops just have a hardware trigger that when the screen is closed, the screen/backlight turns off to conserve power.

I am pretty sure it should always turn off... the power setting thing is just to decide if you go into hybernate/sleep/whatever

On my 1400 I select do nothing and it still turns off the backlight.

Yeah.. mine's set to "do nothing" as well when I close the lid because I don't want it hibernating/sleeping because I have active applications that run in the background that I don't want suspended.. but my screen and backlight remain on when I close the lid. Maybe I ought to talk to Dell then, faulty lid-closing switch maybe.

My 1400 doesn't have the issue. (Basically the same as a 1420)

I know it's almost the same, but i'd like a 1420 user to chime in and let me know what they think.. just incase that part is different.

I have my 1420 set to do nothing when I close the lid. At about an inch left to closing, the screen turns off. I think maybe it's just you?

Then I have a broke close-lid detector or something. Sigh.
Now to talk to Dell support..
