I just got my 1520 today. Specs below:
Intel(r) CoreTM 2 Duo T7500 (2.2GHz/800Mhz FSB/4MB cache)
2GB Shared Dual Channel DDR2 at 667MHz
High Resolution, glossy widescreen 15.4 inch display (1680x1050)
256MB NVIDIA(r) GeForce(r) Go 8600M GT
160G 7200RPM SATA HDD
Genuine Windows VistaTM Home Premium Edition
Integrated 10/100 Network Card and Modem
CD / DVD writer (DVD+/-RW Drive)
Creative Labs Express Sound Card (X-Fi)
Intel Next-Gen Wireless-N Mini-card
85Whr Lithium Ion Battery (9 cell)
Built-in Bluetooth capability (2.0 EDR)
Upon booting it up and going through the Windows setup, I immediately noticed the graininess of the screen. For my desktop I have a Dell 2007WFP which also has some graininess due to the anti-glare coating, but it is nowhere near as bad as what I see on the 1520. You might be able to see the graininess in the pic below. It is tough to take a picture of it with a digital camera in low light.

After the windows setup, I checked the screen for backlight bleed, and this is what I found:

To me, that is very bad back-light bleed. I don't have anything to compare this to, however, as this is my first laptop.
The next thing I checked was the head phone jack noise, and low and behold, it was there. I heard a scratchy, beeping noise when no song was playing AND when listening to quieter songs. I did not test it with the Creative Express card I received, because I am going to send it back. This test was done with the base sound card that Dell offers.
I did not hear the clicking and whining noises from the CPU that some people have mentioned.
While I am really disappointed with the problems with this machine, I love the build quality. Everything is sturdy and there are no squeaks or strange noises. I really wish dell would provide some better quality screens for this line.
I am calling Dell tomorrow to return this laptop. I know the screen is going to annoy me if I try to use it any longer. It is already hurting my eyes.

one question, why is back light bleeding a problem?
-
the silk screen effect is that bad huh....yikes all these threads are scaring me.
I'm not worried about the headphone interference because there is a fix for that. -
Because when I watch movies and use dark backgrounds it looks like crap.
-
that about looks like the amt of leakage on my 1520...and i have the same screen resolution as you.
-
As i have posted before, i have a $20 headset that has NO interference at all. Got it at radio shack. Just so those prospective buyers know that it isn't the end of the world.
Edit: also my graininess is not that bad, and unnoticeable in games. I am assuming the same would be for movies, but i don't know yet. -

Hopefully mine won't be this bad. I ordered 1280 x 800, so it might be different. Did anybody else order 1280 x 800? I'd like to know what their displays are like.
-
just rebooted and checked my display. I have a 1440x900. Maybe a little bleeding in the first 1/4 inch or less, then it just fades out.
-
Light leakage on mine is minimal--there's about a 1/4" along the bottom center of my screen but that's it.
-
-
Watching movies in widescreen mode with black bars at the top and bottom, playing dark games, etc.
-
I am now trying to decide what to get after I send this 1520 back.
Stella, when you ordered your G1S, what was the estimated shipping time for it? Also, what stores have the G1S on display? I definitely want to see it before I buy it. -
how do u test leakage?
-
-
I thought you sent yours back, stella?
-
They told me it should ship between one and four days from when they received my order. I had the HD upgraded; if you order stock, you might get it shipped faster since they won't have to mess with it. I selected UPS Ground shipping, so I'm hoping to have it by Friday or Monday.
Mtyler, I've ordered the return, but UPS tried to pick it up at my neighbor's house instead of mine so it's here until next Monday. -
aggie can you please please test out the creative sound card! please!!!
-
On my 1520 the screen in blank preview i see the light bleed at the lower border about a 1/4" but it depends on what tilt your viewing the screen lol.
It's a lap top and my 1st but i don't consider this a deal breaker, what the big deal when ambient light is reflecting off the screen and I also do not see the grain artifacts.
Just my thoughts. -
Sorry. -
Wow. There sure are a heck of a lot of problems with those darn inspirons
