I don't think that's a laptop processor, so i don't think that the sockets are compatible, but I'm not sure. If they are (you could see if you can find some info on dells website, or phone them) then yes you should be able to replace it. However, I'm quite confident that replacing the processor yourself would void the warranty of the laptop.

Thats a desktop processor and Im sure the processor that you ordered will just be fine. Its a core 2 duo processor which would beat any of the old pentium dual cores by a decent margin anyways. So it should be fine.

Just take the one you ordered, like ike said it's ok.

You can upgrade it at any time you want. So why not wait a year and then switch to the newest generation? The next generation will certainly be compatible so you can sell your old processor and upgrade it with a new one if necessary.

For now, the one you ordered will be ok.

I agree with you maati. I am hoping that the next generation will be compatible with our mobos. However, it appears that we can replace the processors and video cards ourselves in the 1500 (not for the timid) as is seen in the Service Manuals provided by Dell. While I got the T5470 processor and 8400M GS video card, I was hoping for a video card more powerful than the 8600M GT to come in and was planning to pop that into my lappy. Anyone have any ideas if something more powerful for the 8600M GT will be available for the Vostro 1500/Inspiron 1520?

There won't be anything more powerful until the next generation.

So if you are lucky you will be able to upgrade to a 9600M GT (or whatever it will be called) next year.

Yeah.. damn... that'll be a while I guess although I don't know if the 9600M GT will even work for the Vostro at that time... I wonder if anyone on this board is going to upgrade from the 8400 to the 8600 themselves instead of through dell
