Ok, this is what you need to do for those of you who wants to have audio on XP! I spent the whole afternoon playing with this and found that the problem is the installer, no the driver! here is how to get Sigmatel 92xx driver to install and get sound on XP!!!!

    1) get the latitude driver mentioned above R153908
    2) run the file, and the installation will fail
    3) use program such as WinRAR to extract R153908 to a directory, in there you will see a WDM directory.
    4) go to control panel look under system devices, after you install R153908 and fail, you should see a device (!)PCI DEVICE
    5) right click on it, select properties, and select reinstall/update driver
    6) point the program to the R153908\WDM directory, click next and some new device will be installed
    7) after this installation, another device will ask for a deiver, point the program to the R153908\WDM directory again

    YOU NOW HAVE SOUND!!!!!!!!

NEXT THING -> QuickSet :p anyone have a working one?

Thanks for the tip on standby Joeho :) Also glad you found the audio fix. For me it was a case of simply installing the Intel drivers, rebooting and then XP detected new hardware. Right when it detected new hardware found and started up the wizard, i double clicked the audio drivers and they installed fine, and the wizard went away straight after the installer finished.

Here's hoping for proper driver support soon from Dell. I too would like the quick set drivers, but I haven't actually looked for any that may work from other Dell Laptop lines yet.

Kysterama - thank you for all the information and effort you went to in this thread. My 1520 arrived yesterday and after a few hours it was Dual Booted with everything up and going.
In the weeks before delivery I did more research which may benefit anyone attempting the dual boot.
    1. This > http://www.goodells.net/dellrestore/vista.htm < tells you how Dell set up their Vista computers, a wander around the site will give you more info on the other disk partitions.
    2. I blew the restore partition away and wanted to reclaim its space while also shrinking the Vista partition to 25Gb and used > http://gparted.sourceforge.net/livecd.php < to do it. Vista wouldn't load after the shrink, but putting the Dell supplied re installation DVD for Vista on fixed that, it repaired the boot sector and all worked again.
    3. I installed XP in its own 25Gb partition using a slipstreamed CD that I made that included drivers from your download and also added SP2. I couldn't get the video drivers to work but a quick Google turned up these drivers > http://laptopvideo2go.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=14222 < which installed from the included setup. I can't recall the order that I installed the other drivers, I just executed the install files from your download and checked the device manager and watched the yellow exclamation marks disappear.
    4. The final gotcha was VistaBootPro, but again you had cleared the way and I followed your advice way back in post #22 and bingo - dual boot to Vista or XP.
    5. The last thing was to create a Data partition of 100Gb in the remaining disk space that would be accessible from programs run either under Vista or XP.
    6. Like you I haven't got the Modem working and won't even try, but sound, webcam etc all go.
    7. Lid closed - computer goes into standby, lid opened - computer wakes up and screen works. There is an option in Ctrl Panel, Sigmatel Audio, enable power management that I checked, maybe that controls the screen ?

kysterama, great thread...been very helpful so far.

I would have never thought to look for my XP video drivers under the Vostro model!

However, I am still having two problems converting this new 1520 over to XP Pro.

    1) The Setup for the integrated webcam gets an error="Not valid operating system" anyone else run into this?

    2) I can't find any of the drivers fot Bluetooth.

    Great Thread!! Thanks!!

I now have a 1520 with Media Direct working running Windows XP with NO Yellow Exclamations under Device Manager.

I used the Vostro 1500 Modem Drivers (R150152), to remove my last yellow exclamation next to modem. If you can't find a 1520 XP driver, check the Vostro 1500, you'll probably find what you need.

The only think I don't have working yet is Quickset. I downloaded the Vostro Quickset, but Installshield has some type of hardware check built in, and it fails with an error message saying unsupported hardware...

Anyone know how to modify Installshield setup?

Still no luck with Quickset, I've tried multiple versions from several dell laptop models, all of which fail.

I'm also trying to the the Soundblaster Audigy HD Software Edition working.

Creative Gave me the following links:

    Basic Install Checklist: http://us.creative.com/support/kb/article.asp?l=3&sid=29037

Location of the MBSetup.exe file for XP:
    http://files.creative.com/ManualDn/Applications/AudigyADVANCEDMB/MBSetup.exe

But my MBSetup.exe install is still failing, anyone have any luck getting this working?
