Just got my 1530 yesterday and checked the properties. Did not indicate my Vista had SP1. Microsoft recommends that SP1 be installed via WU. This should have began happening in mid April. So, should I wait or should I got to Microsoft and do it myself?

Also, am I a nooob if I don't really want to implement most of the tweaks/mods and bloatware removals suggested? I am not that tech savy and don't want to screw anything up. Should I partition or not?

Of course it does not come with SP1. Even mine. Also, you don't have to do anything to partition or whatever... My 1720 doesn't come with SP1 too. Not a problem.

You just need to download the .exe file from here and it does all by itself. You don't have to do any editing or partitioning or whatsoever. No mods, no tweaks or anything manual like that. No. :) It's that simple... All you just need to do is click, next, next and next... That's all you need to do. :) You're done updating!

Just note that the installation could take you a while and your machine will restart automatically.

EDIT: Opps, upon reading your thread again I realized you were referring about your bloatware... Sorry man. :) Anyway, if you just follow the guide step by step and carefully, you shouldn't have any problems. For me, I got myself a 200GB 7200rpm HD. So after reformatting my 320GB HD to set my 200GB as a primary HD my dell factory image is also gone and even the mediadirect crapware. I had a to do a total Vista install. So for my case I don't have to do the steps as explained. And no, I never supported or even use any third party tweaks and mods to boost my system speed. For some reason I never liked doing that, just defrag, scan and msconfig should boot your vista in less than 30 seconds.

If your configuration is not compatible with certain aspects of the Vista Service Pack you will not be offered the Service Pack through Windows/Microsoft Update until any remaining driver issues have been resolved.

If you go ahead and forcibly download and install SP1 against their recommendation, and it bricks your machine, don't go crying to Microsoft.

My advice would be to let it just sort itself out by turning on Automatic Updates and letting it do its thing. When your machine meets the requirements it will inform you of the update. As a tech layman you're only opening yourself up to more hassle if the direct update fails, be it marginally or monumentally.

Thanks L.Rawlins. I did a massive windows update last night when I set up my machine with Antivirus. SP1 was not in it. The only driver it updated was my Intel wireless card. Will other drivers that are out of date update through WU? I saw some threads on here talking about updating UPEK drivers before installing SP1, but I am not really sure what UPEK is. I think something with the fingerprint reader. Is there a way for my machine to tell me what drivers need updates?

With the specs as mentioned in the sig I'm sure there shouldn't be any problem with the 1530 - Unless you force the computer to off while installing the updates. I've seen a number of users around here with the exact specs and using SP1 without problems.

My FZ shipped on 4/18 with SP1. I did a clean install and then reloaded SP1 from my Sony Recovery partition. I do not think you will have a problem (odd that SONY actually beat DELL on this, IMHO!), but it would also not hurt you to just wait. It WILL show up eventually.

I would also suggest that, even as a newbie, you follow the Dell Clean Install Guide by Les that is a sticky here. I did when I had a 1720 (only for a week, then returned it) and it was a piece of cake. And the beauty of it is, even if you mess up the Recovery will take you back to the factory install.

With the M1330, I got SP1 to show up on Windows update by updating the video drivers (used the ones from the Dell support site), updating the UPEK fingerprint reader drivers (used the drivers from the UPEK website), and uninstalling the audio drivers (which caused Vista to reinstall some "high definition audio" generic audio drivers of its choosing). Then SP1 showed up on Windows update. After SP1 was installed, I used Device Manager to "update" my sound drivers back to the original Sigmatel drivers (from the Dell site).

The old sound drivers and old fingerprint reader drivers are known to cause SP1 not to show up on Windows Update. I'm not so sure about the video drivers.

If you have an antivirus on your computer, disable it before installing SP1.

Hey crisp, I bought a M1530 in April and got SP1 to show up after updating UPEK and audio drivers. I did not have to uninstall anything, I just updated. I use AVG anti-virus and didn't have to disable that.
