I bought my 700m early 2005 and I've held onto it for such a long time because it's been the perfect laptop for me.

It was sitting in my trunk yesterday and my car got slammed into from the back while parked. The laptop is now in 3 pieces and it's crushed

I still have until September 2009 left on my complete care warranty after checking. What would they most likely replace my laptop with?

I don't know if Dell makes a laptop as good as the 700m was in it's prime. Battery life, portability, and size are a big factor to me...but if there isn't something comparable, I'll settle for a bigger machine if it's loaded. I'll probably end up selling it if it's not what I want.

Anyone have any idea? Should I wait a couple of months until I make a claim? I'm gonna miss this little machine

the mini 9 is comparible in size and capability, the only flaw is the harddrive is smaller and theres no cd drive.

If you need a cd drive i think they'll probably replace it with one of their 13 inch laptops.

I have a 710m thats been under my bed for for about 7 months lol.

I don't think they'll replace it with another 700m, it's a super old model (4 years). Doubt they will have it in stock. Although I wouldn't mind if they did replace it with a new one :D

I'm not gonna take a mini 9 because it would be a huge downgrade in terms of performance and features. I need the drive and hard drive space.

I'd guess you'd get the Dell XPS 1330. If you wait a bit there should be a Studio XPS 1340. You might want to look through that thread for the pictures to see if you like it.

I disagree with the above posters. Dell doesn't hang you out to dry when you get an accidental warranty. In fact, they treat you AWESOME. If I had one guess, it would be that they will offer you a Vostro 1200. It's the modern equivalent of what you bought several years ago.

No, they will not give a business laptop for a home one. They are almost separate companies within dell. Anyways, you will likely get the xps m1330 like others said and it will have better parts than your current one.

Couldn't agree more. My 1520 got wet and they sent me a brand new 1537 with more upgrades than my 1520 had!!

Dell rules! I'd say give them a call and see what they can do for you.

You could easily turn down the M1330 as it is a 13.3" laptop and his was a 12.1.
All he has to do is tell them he wants another 12.1" laptop, and that will give him two possibilities really. The XPS M1210 or the Vostro 1200.

The M1210 is getting quite old itself. I would guess they would give him the M1330.

Jesus, i already told you when i had my 700m replaced, they sent me a 1330. the 1210 isn't made anymore and the vostro is business so that's not possible.

But my point is he can turn down an M1330 because it is different enough.
If being 12.1" is important enough then they will give him another 12.1"
    What else could that be?

Read the above. The can't match your exact notebook if it isn't made anymore, they will give you the next best possible alternative. I'd take the M1330 over the M1210 because it is newer and you'd be settling for a refurb M1210.

OP - Will the M1330 be okay for you? Tell us what they offer, and what you end up getting.

they wont offer anything, he will just get whatever they send, then you can complain about it, maybe they will replace it with another 12.1? who knows. the 1330 is only slightly larger, i was satisfied personally

The return kit is on its way from Dell for me to ship back my 700m.

The m1330 will do for my needs. Wouldn't it be sweet if they replaced it with a Studio XPS 13 though? :D ...yeah I know not gonna happen but I can dream.

Too bad I can't recover my lost data though, my hard drive is just clicking like crazy and buzzing now.

M1330 is lighter then the new Studio XPS. So it could be important for you. And it's surely not a bad laptop (ok, I own one, easy for me to say that ;), it's a beauty, and it should perform much better than your 700m (especially if you remove Vista).

yea its a real pity they dont have anymore high performance 12" notebooks.

i suppose the M1330 and studio xps 13 are the spiritual successors.

That'd be great if you got a M1330, but it seems like the Insipron 13 would be a more equivalent replacement to the 700m.

I used to have a 700m as well with 3 year complete care. If I had known they were likley to replace it with a M1330 then I may have "broken" it instead of selling it on eBay.

Dell received my laptop on Jan 16th and they haven't given me a status update yet.

I called 2 days ago to ask and the CSR told me she would call me back the next day to tell me what was going on, but she never did. :(

I have a feeling this will be a long process.

The status page now shows that I'm getting an M1210 with the following specs:

    Dual Core Yonah T2600
    Dvd+/-rw,8X,Sony,M1210
    Minicard,3945ULD
Windows XP Pro Service Pack 2 (i hate vista)
    Hard Drive,120G
    Ram,2GB,667MHZ,2X1GB
    Battery,Primary,85W,9C

I'm ok with it, but if it has discrete graphics I'm probably going to complain if it gets hot...I don't really want it getting hot on me when it's avoidable with an integrated gpu.

12 inch laptops are kind of a rarity now a days. I would get an hp2230s if you needed one. I see that you already got the M1210 though.

Those specs look great for an M1210. Beats mine..good luck with it. I'm on year 3 with it. I'll upgrade to something similar when there's a mobile version of Core i7 and Windows 7 is standard. Hopefully Dell makes another 12" with specs like that when i'm ready..

Yeah, I've been reading up on temperatures with the Geforce 7400 and it seems like it doesn't get too hot so that is good. Looks like I'll be pleased with it after all :) I can probably play some older games on it just fine.

It comes with the webcam too and it says "discrete base" and "12.1 w/ CMRA" on the invoice so looks like I'm getting the one with the A/V package and 7400.

It's a pretty good upgrade from my 700m albeit the extra thickness.

The laptop is getting here Monday. :D

I don't have any problem with the screen. It's fine. The camera isn't very good. Not the lightest but, not a problem for my use..surfing the web, email, downloading/manipulating pic's from my Canon SD800IS. i use it everywhere around my house and outside on my patio (not now-too freak'n cold!)..........

The laptop arrived, but I've got some problems.

There is a wire sticking out inside the kensington lock slot and the 9 cell battery lasted only 15 minutes. Also, Dell sent me an AC adapter that is 3-prong, but the ac cord is only 2-prong! .

The battery showed 95% capacity (1 hour 45 minutes) which shows it's well worn, but it only ended up lasting 15 minutes before the laptop competely died.

A tech is coming out to replace the motherboard, battery, and ac adapter.

This is my first laptop. I got the 3 year in home warranty and i'm glad i did. I'm on my 3rd motherboard. But ya know what ? They send a guy out within 2 days every time. They have a tendancy to replace a bunch sh!t just to cover there bases. This last time (about 3 weeks ago) the Go7400 went (2nd time), which is sodered (sp?) to the mother board. They replaced the screen, motherboard and keyboard w/ touchpad. I was missing one key. Guess it's easier to replace the whole betty. The first time they came out the connector on the motherboard for the power supply was broken....wouldn't charge.

    ARRGGHHHHHH

There is a delay in the tech arriving/shipping of the parts. The laptop was supposed to be fixed either yesterday or today, and it's still not. No one came, no call, etc.

I called just now to complain about the poor quality control (how the heck do they send an adapter that doesnt even work with this laptop model?!), I know mistakes happen but this is just ridiculous.

I paid a lot of money for next day service and on-site, and Dell hasn't delivered.

I'm going to escalate this if it's not fixed tomorrow. I'm supposed to be getting a personal call from the XPS CSR tomorrow if the tech doesnt arrive by 5, but that's what they said last time and I never got a call.

    Sheesh.

I might just get rid of this thing after they fix it, based on a lot of people's experiences with this laptop and Dell service. Might just have to go back to Asus.

Honestly, I still don't understand why people say Dell's service is horrible. Bad experiences do happen though.

I've had problems exactly like yours, where a tech is supposed to come out and fix it, but nobody calls, nobody shows etc. Usually that's on the tech company that Dell contracts with and not Dell themself. My experience has always been that if you let Dell know, they will follow up with the service center and make sure somebody gets out there. Often times I've had the rep put me on hold while they call the service center to figure out what's going on and who's supposed to be fixing the laptop, when they will be there etc.

Out of all the service calls I've had on Dell's desktops or laptops I've only had that happen once.

I think you should keep doing what you are doing by bugging dell, the tech company etc. But give the laptop a chance to get completely working before you decide to get rid of it.

I'm sure you will be happy eventually as that is a nice upgrade from a 700m. I used to have one and I loved that little laptop, but it had to go in favor of the dual core laptops when those came out!

The laptop is now up and running. The tech came by and fixed the wire sticking out (it was the modem wire), replaced the battery, and brought a new charger.

It's working great now, hope it stays that way  Just runs a little warmer than I'm used to.

Thanks for all the input guys.
