Do all of the icons disappear? Does the taskbar reappear if you put your mouse on the very bottom of the screen (like if it was in auto-hide mode)?

Note: Taken from Dell Support Web-Site...

How do I restore the Microsoft® Windows® Taskbar and Start button if they have disappeared?

    Table of Contents
    1. How do I restore the Microsoft® Windows® Taskbar and Start button if they have disappeared?

The Taskbar with the Start button on it can be hidden off-screen. To restore the Taskbar, use one of the following methods:

Move your mouse cursor to the edge of the screen where the Taskbar was last located.
Usually along the edge of the screen, where the Taskbar was last, there will be a thin gray line.
When the cursor turns into a thin arrow pointing away from that edge, click and hold the left mouse button and drag away from that edge.
This should allow you to drag the Taskbar to the desired size.
You also can get the Taskbar back by performing the following steps:

    ***********************************************
    OR

Press the <Windows> key on the keyboard (it looks like a flying window).
Click the Start button and click Shut Down.
Click Restart the computer and click OK.
When the system beeps, press and hold the <Ctrl> key.
The Windows Start Up Menu appears.
Highlight Safe mode and press the <Enter> key.
When you receive a warning message, click OK.
Click Start, click Shut Down, select Restart the computer, and click OK.
When Windows restarts, the Taskbar is restored to the bottom of the screen.

    ***********************************************
    OR

Press and hold the Ctrl key and press the Esc key.
    Release both keys.
Press and hold the Alt key and press the Spacebar.
Continue to hold the Alt key and press the S key.
A thin arrow appears at the bottom middle of the screen.
Release all keys and press the Up Arrow key until the Start button appears.
Release the Up Arrow key and press the Enter key.

I would sudgest contacting dell directly. It sounds like perhaps some windows driver has been corrupt. You may need to re-format windows, and start over fresh. Good luck! :)

fatpenguin92... did this problem start happening recently? ...Or every since you bought your computer?

Did you install new program before this started happening?

Try using MSCONFIG and report back to tell us what programs are starting up....

Be old-school: run anti-virus check and anti-spyware check...

Could you take a screenshot of your screen and post it here?

Just for the heck of it, disable AIM..and see if it still happens..

Run the Dell PC-Check up.. and see what results you get (ignore the sound level issue) http://pccheckup.dellfix.com/rel/?randseed=0.616459630855209

Make sure that you also ran Windows Update to have your computer updated..

Also make sure that you have all your drivers updated form the Dell web-site....

It looks like explorer.exe is shutting down...use Ctrl-Alt-Delete and select new process and type explorer.exe.

Did you get the XP disk when you ordered your system? You might try repairing windows.

Dell doesn't send it unless it is requested on the order for $10 extra. You can use the system restore, but that will reinstall all the bloatware too. I would call them up and request and OS disc from them. They might send it for free.

In addition to what USAF said, it will give you a clean system, so your computer will run faster. Generally, I always recommend to do a clean format when you first get the laptop because dell has a ton of junkware on it.

Is the sound like a fan running or sound like the disk is spinning inside? If yes, then yes that is the same on mine and probably most systems. Unless you have autoplay turned off, anytime you open/close the CD, Autoplay might be trying to read the disk.

Yes, the CD-rom is looking to see if there is a CD in the bay. That sound you here is the lense moving to check for a normal disc and mini-disc. It is normal.

It's not really a problem. You'll experience this with any CD/DVD drive (usually). You could turn off Autoplay, and that might help, but it will probably still make the noise since it is trying to find the CD.

If you order the Windows disc it won't have it on there. The Dell factory restore disc does.

There are several CDs that you can get from Dell. One is the OEM XP disk which will give you a clean install. Then you have 3 or 4 other disks that will contain all of the junk and extra software. Make sure to also request the Cyberlink PowerDVD (dvd player and decoder) and Sonic RecordNow. You have to request those separately.

are you talking about ordering it from Dell? or just buying a retail version?

If you are ordering it from dell, you can only request the XP disk that matches your system. I wasn't sure if you had Media Center on your laptop or not, so that is why I was saying that.

Assuming you have system restore enabled. go into the help section of the startup if you can and select system restore. Select a restore point which is before the boom and you should be up again. It will have the effect of returning the system to that date and time.

For what it is worth this thing is very useful. The bigger you make the save area the more restore points you will have. This is a great way to raise yur system from the ashes if you somehow mess it up. If you browse backwards in there you can get an idea of about how long is is saving for you. The oldest are dumped to make room for the newest.
