I have a 600m bought from DellHome about 8months ago. first of all, the "R" key doesn't really work, always need to hit it twice in order to type a "r"!! second, the screen is really breaking down!! even when boot up, it has many "colored" line during the boot up screen (from Dell logo to windowxp booting screen), and once inside windows, the color and graphic is breaking down, many many small little lines and the color looking like it's in 8bit mode!!

I'm wondering, since I have 2 yrs warranty on it, what will they do about it?? I know they could probably replace the keyboard, but how 'bout the screen??? it's really a painful experience to look at it!! will they replace a new laptop for me?? also, if so, will it be wise to wait till they discontinued the 600m model with the newer dual core one before I contact them (I have another computer to use), and hoping they could replace it with a newer model?? or they could just replace the screen and the keyboard and call it done??

many tks in advance guys!!! you know, I really hate to even look at it now.... :(

haha I'm not sure if it'd be wise or not but man I like your thinking. I'd personally be to impatient to wait for that time but if you're patient enough I say wait....hold out as long as you can and get as much out of it as possible. But then again maybe I'm just a cheap *** trying to get as much for my money as possible :D

Most likely they will have you send it in for service. They will replace the screen and the keyboard...make sure you take out the harddrive...they have a harddrive they put in to test everything.

I don't think they will let you upgrade...you might want to call to make sure though.

I know I most likely need to ship it to them. however, I do have the so called at home service. what does that mean? will they send some guy over to look at and take it to save my trouble??

I thought they can't/won't replace a laptop screen..... so, most likely they will just replace the stuffs (screen and keyboard) and ship back to me huh??

soooo, it doesn't really make much of a difference to wait for the 600m replacement model then.... :( I guess I'll probably sell it after they fix it and get a new laptop then (might be not from Dell again.....)

ok, after 2 weeks and many parts replaced, my laptop is finally fixed!!

1st, they had me run the built in dignoistic tool, and found hard drive has error, so, they blame on the hard drive (which I've told them it should be the video card, but hard drive has problem too!). good thing is they send me a 7k100 7200rpm same size hard drive for replacement!! (good job to them!!!) and they sent a new keyboard along with it too.

after replaced, problem still the same, video still broken down and looks like $hit!! so, this time, they sent a tech along with a new screen. he replaced the screen, but again, problem still there. no improvement at all!!

so, the tech called Dell and told them it's most likely be the video card (told you at the very first time!! duh!!). so, today another tech came over with a new motherboard 'cos the video card is embedded onto the motherboard. now, it looks pretty again!!

therefore, after 3 shippment/visit, my problem is fixed with essentially a brand new laptop, at least it now has a new screen, new keyboard, new and a lot faster hard drive, new motherboard (I know they most likely are NOT brand new but refurb'ed).

p.s. now I have a friend wanna buy my laptop for $500! should I get rid of it and get a new one (really wanna get a dual core laptop), or just keeping it since most of the stuffs is new now??

    my 600m spec:
    PenitumM 1.8ghz (2MB L2, 400mhz FSB)
    60GB Hitachi 7k100 7200rpm hard drive
ATI 9000 video card (forgot is it 32mb or else....)
    512MB ram (2 sticks)
    DVD/CD-R combo
wireless, 14" 1024x768 screen, blah blah blah....

$500....I think you should be able to get more than that. But I suppose since it is your friend you are giving a nice discount. The core duo's are nice...depending on what you use them for.

    Duo- Good for multi-tasking.

P-M - Better for single core applications. Games and the like.

Glad to hear it got fixed, but man that is alot of hassle.
