Ooooo, thats a bummer (a bummr actually). No more leaning around corners. Anyway, I'll stop making fun.

What kind of laptop is it? Where'd you buy it? Are you tech savvy?

It could be as simple as cleaning (did you check for any goo or anything?), or it might need replacement.

its the dell 6400. its exactly 1 week old and now i realised that the e doesn't work when i press it from 1 angle and th only way it works is when my finger is exactly on top of the key 180 degree above it and presses on it.

call dell tech support, they may get you to run a diagnostic...if not they will send you a new keyboard that you can install yourself and then ship back the defective one to dell

How is that diagnostic? Could it be something else on the computer that is broken?

They usually just make you run diagnostics for some precaution purposes. If you tell them that it doesn't work in safe mode as well, then they will probably just send you a new keyboard.

in the diagnostic test there is a keyboard test. but as mZimm said if you tell them it doesn't work in safe more or at all they will just send you a new one. If you are going to type to them make sure you dont use any e's ;)

Just tell them that it doesn't work at all. It saves the hassle of going through all the diagnostics test.

If something is wrong with the keyboard, the only solution is to replace it.

good call. keyboard will come faster. if you need a system exchange just switch out the HDD's when the new one comes (if the new keyboard doesnt work either.

Yeah, there shouldn't be a problem switching the HDs between systems exactly the same.

Wouldn't switching the HD's cause an issue with Windows XP? I thought it registers the hardware ID's, so even if it is the same hardware, the hardware has different ID inside.

Atleast that's how I heard it works.

AFAIK, you shouldn't have any problems. XP does detect the hardware, but I think it is set to detect all of the hardware for that particular model or even possibly Dell.

It isn't hard to remove it. You just remove one screw, and swap the HDD out.

my friend's W button stopped working after playing WoW for 6 months. hooking up another keyboard to your laptop would be a good idea if you were planning on playing video games on it.

yes...they will send you a new system and you will have 10 days to send the other system back or they will charge you. Switching out the HDD's should only take about 2 mins max. As SouthernGirl said, you just remove one screw and then slide out the HDD

is it possible to have the wrong keyboard? cause the backing of the new and old one look completly dfferent, and while opening my computer up i realised theres a V marked in marker and the metal there is demented.

It is possible. Dell has made mistakes before, but Dell should be able to tell you if that keyboard is compatible with your laptop or not. I'm sure they probably have different models of keyboards for each model (I could be wrong though )
