After I deleted all the partitions, formatted the HD, Re-installed Windows, and had everything working perfectly again including Media Direct and Media Experience, I noticed a loose piece of plastic or metal jingling inside my notebook.

I powered it off, shook it a bit (very lightly) to see were it was coming from, then I tried to power it back on.... DEAD! The loose piece sounded like it was coming from the fan area.

I called up dell (after they hung up on me the first time by transferring the call to someone else) and they said they would replace the laptop with a refurbished one. I laughed and said it's only 4 days old, you got to be kidding me. I said forget it, I'll just return it for a full refund.

I really like this model, but I may look at another brand. :(

wow, not what I want to hear when thinking about purchasing a dell. What is the big deal with a refurbished one? They fixed everyhting that is wrong with it. As long as there arent any physical blemishes, what is the big deal? I would take one. Hell Ill bet you would have less problems with a refurbished one that a new one.

cant say i've had any such problems... have you considered opening it up and finding out what that rattling noise is? you can always return it and just re order if you still have faith in dell, for the most part with the exception of a few problems people seem to be rather happy with dell in terms of price to performance ratios go.

I'm glad you managed to return it Tommy. Did you touch a circuit board? No one should recieve a new notebook in such a condition. I think this was probably an isolated incident. But I understand if you want to choose something else after that experience. You can fille out the 'What Should I buy? FAQ' listed at the top of the 'What should I buy' forum and we'll help you choose something you'll like just as much, if not better.

i had a 5-day old M140 die on me...and i didn't even do anything. came home one day and it was the BSOD. after two hours on the phone with tech support, they thought it was the HD and sent me a new (refurbed!) one. well, that didn't solve the problem either, so i sent it back. i didn't want to play tech support with a brand new laptop. i am getting a full refund with no restocking fee. i did have to pay for shipping though. good thing we have a business account with UPS at work.

however, i did score almost the same laptop on dell outlet a week later for $220 cheaper (previously ordered new). ;)

oh, and i am sorry to hear about your E1505! that stinks! i was gutsy enough to try another dell. i really liked the M140...for all of the five days i had it!

I'm glad you were able to return your fail notebook Callisto. Sorry to here about your trouble. You do have guts. I still wouldn't touch a Sony Viao after a bad experience with one some years back. Then again, I had problems with the Toshiba I had prior to my Dell and I probably would by from them again just as likely as I would another Dell in the future.

what i've learned is this: every laptop manufacturer makes the occasional lemon. and, upon talking to people, there's always one brand they hate, have sworn off and will NEVER buy again. however, you need to look at customer service and you also have to take into consideration the bigger picture. some people hate their laptops because THEY screwed them up and some people just got unlucky.

i had an emachines for two years and i loved the thing, despite 1) buying it from best buy, 2) having to send it in twice for cracked hinges / flickering monitor and 3) sales reps at places like american telling me they don't sell them anymore due to quality issues. emachines customer service was great and they took care of me, 100% and free of charge. they never could fix that dang cracked hinges issue, but you gotta admire their service.

in the past 5 weeks, i have owned a dell, emachines, gateway, hp and compaq, in my search to find a laptop that suits me and here are my quick thoughts:

    * dell is cheap and their customer service ain't too bad. good deals, pretty decent laptops (despite mine dying on day 5). i've got dell #2 on the way!
    * compaq was fine except for a touchpad issue (returned). of course, best buy could not duplicate the issue. stupid geek squad.
    * hp was nice, but it had a loud fan. again, anal, i know.
    * gateway is an oven and is already being sent in for repairs - weird issue with the cd-rom.

i think it just depends on the person and how picky you are. most people probably would have kept most of the laptops i've returned. i just think it's kinda funny when you buy brand X laptop and people start coming out of the woodwork about it; "oh, my sister's best friends' dad's co-worker had a brand X and he hated it!". ugh.

I am defiantly not bashing the brand as I probably just got a lemon. After looking at all the brands Best Buy sells (just testing out different brands), I am pleased on the E1505 case design and durability. Very solid. Too bad the E1505 doesn't come in the M90 design. I really like the M90.

I basically just turned it off, shook it to locate where this loose piece of plastic or metal was, then tried to power it back on and it wouldn't.

When I plugged the charger in, it would come on for a split second then shut off. (judging by the green led on the charger)

    :D That was good.

The reason dell offered you a refurbished one is they could send it out ASAP. Dell's refurbished laptops are kept in the US. But If you wanted a new one, they would have to have it made in Malaysia (Where all of dells laptops are made)then send it to you . And that could take 2-4 weeks. :p

ooops , it's not an easy death because it requires to contact dell' repaire center. ok I think when you removed the cover or metal piece so it made scratches on electric circuits.

I never opened it, or removed the cover. Anyway, it is on it way back to dell and they said they would issue a full refund. I will just wait a bit and re-order another.

Wow...forgot about this old thread....well after numerous tries with dell in 2008, I decided to go with a MacBook Pro. I ordered another yesterday to get the new upgrades, so that makes two of them now. Awesome notebook, no complaints.

I'm glad you found a notebook that fits your need.

I have a 6400/e1505, and it's been working well for me.
