Anyone else have a Vostro that seems to be constantly accessing its HD? I have checked Indexing and it says its complete, I even tried indexing a second time but the thing is still just chuging away on my desk. I can't think of what could even be accessing it any suggestions?

That doesn't mean it's not indexing, if you want to fully investigate what it is you'll need to disable the Indexing Service in services.msc ;)

Turn off SuperFetch and System Restore as well.

Noo, not superfetch. That doesn't thrash the hard drive as much as everyone says. Superfetch greatly increases program response time, keep it. System Restore, Windows Defender, and Automatic Virus scans all cause the hard drive to thrash so disable those.

I have all those disabled (The automatic scans) and my hard drive never thrashes, and I still have superfetch.

well, system restore only tracks system files changes and not your documents. By disabling system restore, you have deleted all restore points. That means, if you fail to boot or some program fails to operate, you can't go back to a restore point and restore your system anymore.

A system restore point is created when you install programs etc. I don't think this will add to the constant grinding problem but I may be wrong.

Proper backups are far more effective than relying on System Restore to save your work. Also, with Gmail and other services offering ~2GB mail storage, just mail yourself any important document daily :D

I've been having the same issue on my Vostro and I'm usually pretty good at fine tuning the system. I turned off system restore and it made a huge difference in system performance, the HD is still going. Wondering if Vista Ultimate has anything to do with it.

Do turn off superfetch... unless you have less than 1GB or less.... Superfetch (2gb or more memory) alone is why you upgrade to vista
