Don't misinterpret me as saying if you are in the boxing stage your computer will be shipped today or Monday, because it could of just gotten into the boxing stage today. It would have had been in the boxing stage FRIDAY in order for it to be shipped today or Monday.

What exactly are all of the so-called 'stages' that a Dell Notebook goes through?

Doubleblack, would you happen to know why my notebook is already in the boxing stage and then they say the estimated shipping date is the 18th? Why would it take so long for them to ship it? The 18th was the original estimated shipping date, but you would think they would change it to make it earlier...

    Hey Larson,
I just read what you posted and tried something because my issue was similar. I have a July 16th estimated shipping date listed on the web as in production despite the phone line saying it was in boxing. I just chatted with a rep (and tried double black's attempt to upgrade shipping too.) They said it was in boxing and will ship in an estimated 2-3 buisness days. They also said the could not upgrade shipping in the final stage (D'oh). So, it seems its going out the 10th or 11th and arriving via standard Friday the 13th (aw crap, just realized that doesn't bode well)- Wednesday the 18th.

So add two days to my dates and that's probably what your getting if the shipping is the same.
P.S. 1280x800 anti-glare represent! Most are ordering higher resolutions and not understanding it isn't necessarily the correct choice.

From what I understand, "Boxing" includes putting it in the box and shipping it from Asia to the US distributor, which is why it takes so long.

Asia to here is about 10 hours. and dont forget that theirs something called an international date line that they cross. so if they fly like 10 am monday from China then they guys at shipping would get it at like 8am on Monday (my math is probably off a little).

even still if the plane lands on monday then they might take like 3-4 hour to unpack it and load it directly onto the UPS plane. I HIGHLY doupt that they would take the time/effort/money to unload it into some warehouse and then load it onto trucks. they probably just give it strait to fedex.

Well, it obviously takes longer to put it in a box, fill up a truck, drive it to the airport, fly it to the US, and drive it to the FedEx distributor than just to put it in the box :p.

Yes, estimated ship dates are never updated...you are given one when ordering, and it never changes. As for the boxing stage, this is what the boxing stage is:

Machines are loaded onto pallets in Asia, and all wrapped up. They are flown over to Memphis, TN by a China Airlines Cargo 747 every business day. Everything is then unloaded in Memphis, and taken to a Dell Warehouse. Here, the machines are placed in boxes with perphials such as manuals, power cords, monitors, etc. and given to the carrier.
