    Hello

My XPS M1530 is equipped with the Seagate Momentus 200GB (7200RPM). I often read that this HDD is very quiet. However, mine is quite noisy, it's always rattling and sometimes it makes a click, almost a "squeal"

Is this normal HDD behaviour? Can I ask Dell to send me another one? I have already tested the HDD's health but everything turned up OK ...

Typically noise comes from hard drives if they have suffered from impact damage, drops, etc. Get a replacement.

I'd get it replaced, as others have stated. Usually a clicking drive is soon to be a drive no more.

Should I call customer service or Tech support since there's no real technical problem ...? Will they replace it without problem? Will the new HDD be a refurbished one or a totally new one?

    Tech support
    They will replace it.
Don't know if it will be a refurb. How long have you had your your system and what type of warranty do you have?

Just wondering, how will I get Dell to send me a new HDD when the diagnosis programmes do not show any problem?

*edit* I just ran chkdsk and it said there are some problems with the HDD and that I have to run chkdsk/f to solve it. Will try this during my lunch break. How long will it take?

if it is running constantly, then your laptop base must be getting hot...

The left side (where the HDD is) is quite hot, while the right side is cold. SiSoftware Sandra measures 50° for the HDD.

OK, I'm using some progs to check the HDD.
I'm thinking of requesting a new (refurb) laptop because the BSODs are starting again and I'm getting fed up with it.

    Problems I have:

    - Lot's of BSODs, unable to find the cause (hardware related according to Windows)
    - Noisy HDD
    - Keyboard isn't always responsive
    - Progs randomly crashing

I bought this laptop for €1400 back then and for that amount I expect a good laptop, not an unstable one ...
Moreover, I had to wait for almost two months to get it.

I'll probably mail Dell and ask them for a proposal.

I replaced the HDD this morning (took me some time to call and have it replaced since I have just graduated etc ...). Anyways, this one is as noisy as the one I had before. I will call my account manager to ask if I can get another one, maybe the 320GB. I don't want to use this type any longer ... :)
