This is great input everyone. You guys brought up a good point about the fact that the 1500 is packaged with Vista Home and not one of the "better" versions. I still see XP being around for some time and for my purposes I think it will be good. It will most likely even operate faster which is really the main thing for me. The kicker is that so far I see people giving feedback that are sold on going with XP but I'm not hearing anyone really trying to push Vista.

Do you guys know anything about the problems some people are having with the Intel 3945 card? I'm was leaning towards that card in the beginning because I read it offers better range and overall performance.

    P.S.
I'm not trying to get off topic. I just figured while we're waiting on people to chime in with their user reviews we could talk about the features offered in this machine. So far this has been extremely helpful. All feedback is appreciated and I'd love to hear more.

FYI: There is a vostro thread on Slickdeals about the fact that someone dumped a half glass of water on the keyboard to test it out, and it fried the vostro. CSR rep said he voided the warranty by doing that, and Dell has changed the wording for the vostro on dell.com to indicated that it only "guards" against spills, not that it is spill proof. Looks like in the 13,000 hours of testing, they never actually dumped liquid on the keyboard.

Wasn't trying to insult anybody. I have them, too, so I feel I have a right to call it as I see it. But, I could've used less strong language, admittedly.

Np mate, i guess your used to the high quality, high priced shure earbuds etc..
As most of us here are probably more along the lines of sony or apple earbuds :p
Depends how strongly you take to good sound! I'm 15 and i have Athena speakers, and Yamaha receiver, so as you can see i am quite a sound freak

I just Feel that spending close to $200 on earbuds! is a bit of a waste

Having said that I'd love to get my hands on some of those shures, just to see if i can really notice a difference in quality

Any way lets stick to the subject of this forum "Vostro" :)

I didn't take it off topic -- my whole point was that even with highly shielded buds with a quad-thick wire and isolation, it's still noticeable. I'm in my 40's; when I was your age, we had to walk around with actual headphones (ok, actually, we walked around with a boombox and left the headphones for midnights using our bedroom stereos, lol). Anyhoo, don't be so defensive; the point clearly wasn't to disparage Creative's headphones, but to emphasize the extent of the interference.

I ordered with 512mb of ram. I intend on upgrading to 4gb in January 2008.

2gb should be good for most apps even with Vista. You probably won't need more unless you are going to be running memory hog programs... like simulating networks with vmware.... ;)

Similar reasons here. Our system at work will not work with Vista. For some reason, you cannot get a good connection to the AS400. I think IBM is working on that, but it's not done yet. Also VMware doesn't work quite right unless you do some funky stuff with your Vista settings. Too bad, that deal on the 1520 was VERY tempting.

I opted to save some dough this time and got the equivalent Dell card, BUT, I recently got the 3945 on my 9400 and D630, and I've had no problems at all with them.

finally got xp up and running. almost had about 3 heart attacks thinking that i bricked my laptop.

this is what you have to do. go into your bios, and switch the hard drive over to ata. be sure when you do this, you are 100% you want to get ride of vista. i tried to get back into vista once more to get some files, but i got a recovery screen pop up. once the xp installer ready, make you delete 2 partitions. i tried to delete only one, and install xp on that one, but i keeped telling me i already have the max partitions allowed. after that you should be fine installing it. the only problem i have now is that i cant find the driver for my wireless

I see you returned your 1520 because of graininess. I did the exact same thing (one of the reasons). I only ordered the 128 NVDIA. I had the same card on the 1520. I can only hope the graininess is not there on the VOSTRO. Are you sure the 256 will resolve the issue, or are you hoping it will?

I ordered my vostro 1500 about 2 weeks ago... the ship date on it was supposed to be August 2nd, but I received a 25% off vostro coupon in the mail from Dell today. I called and tried to get them to apply it to my order to no avail, so I canceled it and re-placed the order.

When all was said and done, I got the same exact system for $1074 shipped vs. $1205 from my original order. My new shipping date is 8/14... I can wait 2 weeks to save $130 :)

So check your email... dell are passing around 20/25/30% coupons that expire August 1st.
