I've had my Vostro for almost a month now, and I like the way it looks. Unfortunately, mine recently got a wide crack/scratch across the lid (I don't know how it got there I'm a very careful person), it's nothing major, but I would rather have it gone. Is there anything I can apply to cover it up?

Here's what it looks like, if you look to the right of the base end you should see it.

Edit: Oh and if there's nothing that would work, would Dell even listen to me over this sort of thing?

There's really not anything you can do. That's why I heavily advocate that people who actually *use* their laptops (as opposed to just parking them on their desks permanently) buy the more expensive business laptops like the Latitudes which have the titanium shells that won't suffer such damage.

You might be able to ask Dell for a replacement cover, but I'm don't think they'd be obligated to provide it to you under warranty, as the scratch you've experienced is just a normal wear and tear item.

Yeah I figured as much, I was hoping for some advice on one or more brands of coating that could be used to fill it out, but even then I'm not sure the Vostro lid is made of plastic (certainly doesn't feel like it). I just want it to disappear.

If you're just looking into covering it up for appearance sakes, there's always Dell Skinit. Would be like...putting a thing bandaid over a cut, I suppose.

Is it possible to purchase a lid for Inspiron 1520 and replace it with the Vostro?

I took a look and they don't have skins for the vostro. Would skins for the Inspiron work for a Vostro? At any rate, I'm guessing using those polymer/plastic fillings is a no go since the lid has been confirmed to be metal?

Yes... The vostro and inspiron 1520 are the EXACT same, other then the paintjob. Also, the skins are just pieces of sticky vinyl... So the ones you buy from dell will pretty much fit on ANYTHING thats got a flat surface.(you might want to go to the official site though... That way you can pick one that does not have the dell emblem in the middle)

You could also order a replacement part for it. There was a topic not too long ago where a guy swapped his Vostro LCD cover with one from a inspiron(ruby red) for cosmetic reasons. Shouldnt be too hard of a procedure, provided you have the right tools.

Yes, one guy has already done it. And it looks much better than an inspiron with a colored lid ;)

It would be nice to know if the mark is a scratch or a crack. A scratch is irritating. But a crack would be downright disturbing if the computer has had very careful treatment.

Damn, it looks like someone keyed your Dell  They do sell stuff in the auto stores to fix up such scratches, might be worth a look.
