I got a Vostro 1500 with the WSXGA+ screen last week. As this is my first laptop, I'm not sure how its screen is performing. The Vostro's colours look dull compared to my flat panel monitor. Normal green, for example, looks like lime green on the Vostro.

I took some pictures with my digital camera comparing the two. Obviously it's not a perfect demonstration, but you should get something of an idea what I mean: Pic1, Pic2. The Vostro is on the right.

As you can see the Vostro looks much duller and the screen was at maximum brightness. Is this normal or is my Vostro's screen under-performing? If this is normal, do other brands such as Apple have better more vibrant colours than Dell's machines?

Get a color colorimeter such as Spyder Express and calibrate your displays, then compare them. Most displays need calibration before they are accurate, because there is variance among displays, even the same models, from manufacturers. Adjustments can be made in driver settings.

no its not...you need to color calibrate them the same as you need to calibrate tv's.

I think somethings up with your screen, on my WSXGA+ my screen looks more like the external display on the left, more orangy than rose colour.

I went to shanti shirts to see how it would look on my screen.

It all depends on your point of reference. Who is to say that the screen on the left is correct? It may be horribly out of calibration...these issues occur with all displays, not just laptop displays. The only way to know for sure is to calibrate one or both of them and then compare. You can download custom calibrated color profiles off the web for various displays, and although you can get one for the exact model you have, it could even be incorrect for your particular display. Only way to know for sure is to calibrate yourself.

The viewing angle is so narrow that you won't be able to get consistent colour at any angle - you may get it right in the center of the screen but the edges would be off.

For office use this is not a big problem. For photo editing, it may be.

You can download the free Nokia Monitor Test at http://majorgeeks.com/download960.html

Among other things, it will display the standard TV color bars. That should give you a basis for adjusting you color.
