I thought I'd share my results of my quick and dirty battery tests. I have a Sony SZ and a Dell ms1330 and was curious which one was better. Both systems have the same processor, led lcd, wireless and Bluetooth on, no power management, mostly sitting idle with cpu util at 1-3%, time shows start at 100% battery until 3% life.

LCD brightness was full on Dell and full-1 notch on the sony, this is what looked equal to my eyes.

There were a few moments when I saw the CPU util spike up to 20-30%, for no appearent reason. Here are my results.

Both the Sony and Dell have 6 cell batteries.

Sony SZ Stamina (Intel graphics) mode
3 hr 45 min actual (OS claimed 3 hr 56 min)

Sony SZ Speed (Nvidia graphics) Mode
    3 hrs 4 mins

    Dell m1330 XP
    2 hrs 50 mins

    Dell m1330 Vista
    3 hr 5 min (claimed 2 hr 13 min)

So here is what's weird, Vista lasted longer than XP on the Dell. Surprising. I dont have vista on the Sony so I wasnt able to test. Bottom line, the results are similar with the exception of the Sony in Stamina mode, the extra 40 mins is a bonus! I will post this in the Sony forum as well.

One big advantage of the Dell, it charges quickly, about half the time of the Sony. The Sony took 5-6 hours to charge.

Surprised you don't get longer, my M1330 goes for 3 1/2 hrs+ while in use and with HSDPA connection active.

I assume you have used a 6Cell on DELL, 3hrs and 5 mins on Vista for idling sound a little bit too low. I was able to watch a full 1.5hr DivX movie off the HDD then talk for another 30 mins on skype and browse the internet (youtube+normal sites) for 40 mins totaling close to 2hrs 40 mins before the battery ran out. Specs are in my sig. Therefore I feel that idling should give more than 25mins extra (especially with a LED screen which most people ”Claim” to be battery efficient than a CCFL).

There is something wrong with your test.

I used a 6 cell on both. Edited first post to include that info.

I had the brightness on full, do you guys watch movies on full bright? I would think that would affect (effect?) the batt life significantly.

Also, the Sony and Dell were so close that I thought my test were in the ball park. I'll try again tonight.

No, I didn’t watch the movie on full brightness, but I assumed since you have a LED and mine is a CCFL difference is maybe canceled out
On second thoughts, maybe your readings are correct since you also didn't have any power management (by that assume you tested under performance mode??).
