I received the notebook yesterday and opening up the box and taking a look at all the goodies was cool. It wasn't until I actually turned the notebook on, everything started going downhill. The first thing I noticed was the screen. It seemed kind of grainy. I compared with my 1520's screen and the 1520 was much clearer (though the 1330 was brighter). Next thing was the CD/DVD RW drive. That thing is SO NOISY. When I inserted a DVD it made some very noticeable sounds that sounded like extremely cheap gears were used to assemble it together. Next was when I took the notebook to the library to study. I usually study in a very quiet environment away from ruckus at home. The notebook proved to emit a very high frequency noise which I believe is that "CPU whine" everyone was blogging about that is correlated to CPU power states. Don't get me wrong in hating the 1330 as it has a very nice design and luxurious additions but the cons far outweigh the pros. It's unfortunate to have another notebook arrive as a disappointment. (Same situation with the first 1520 I received before I received a better one.) Hopefully a replacement would remedy these negative aspects and prevent me from returning or if worse comes to worse, never buy another laptop from Dell.

That's a shame, weeeee. Lots of people have praised that machine, though I have also read a few posts like yours. At the price offerred currently, it might well be worth the effort to keep after the Dell folks until they get a properly functioning notebook to you. Good luck.

His complaints seem hardware specific, not as a detriment to regional manufacturing; so I'm not sure it matters where it was built in this case.

I worry that the XPS franchise is more a shiny veneer than anything else more substantial through components. Time and again, I'm reading thoughts that echo those reservations prior to my own purchasing. :(
