I have my lappy hooked up to a 20" Dell external so I can monitor stuff while I play TF2. While I was waiting, I noticed the core speed was shooting up past the 2.2GHz the processor was rated at.

    Is this normal?

Yes this is normal for C2D. If one core is idle the other can go to the max multiplier +1 for short bursts.

    Your FSB is definitely overclocked...212 * 11 = 2332!!! That isn't increasing the multiplier...you OC'ed the system somehow.

Santa Rosa: "The Santa Rosa platform comes with dynamic acceleration technology. It allows single threaded applications to execute faster. When a single threaded application is running the CPU can turn off one of the CPU cores and overclock the active core. In this way the CPU maintains the same Thermal Profile as it would when both cores are active."

Overclocking by increasing the FSB or the multiplier? Increasing the multiplier should be what it does...by OCing the FSB you guarantee trouble if your RAM isn't good enough for it, or your memory controller....

Holy crap, it's hitting 2550MHz during my gameplay LOL!

    Seems to be ~2300MHz+ constant...

At first, I thought this was the case. But when Greg noticed the FSB is increased [instead of the multiplier, as it was supposed to], then I thought it was just weird...

Your processor doesn't get too hot, hopefully?

Don't mean to be a poohead, but I don't believe you sorry.

I have never heard of this technology, nor does it make any logical sense for a company to overclock via FSB when single threaded applications work.

Well I never claimed any overclock of FSB, and I really have nothing to prove by stating it hit 2500GHz. I was just sharing what I saw. I really have nothing to gain by lying. But I will make an effort to take a pic when I see it happen if you make it worth my while! Then I will gain.

Don't bother. Next time it goes to 2500 just pray and thank god :D

EDIT: I was probably being mean here.. Not knowing if its actually true..

    Sorry.

    nice! i'm jealous

edit: mine does the same thing! i haven't noticed the FSB going up and down (although I haven't watched it much) but the multiplier definitely goes up to 12 (and i have the same processor as yours). that's neat. my GPU also overclocks itself.. core: 513MHz; shader: 1026MHz; mem: 702Mhz
