one important thing to consider before or when buying a dell is the COMPLETE CARE warranty. Make sure when picking the warranty you choose to get the complete care package because there are two to choose from. The complete care covers you in several important ways,
Liquid spilled on or in unit, Floods Repaired or unit replaced
Drops, falls, and other collisions Repaired or unit replaced
Electrical surge Repaired or unit replaced
Damage or broken LCD due to a drop or fall Repaired
Accidental breakage (multiple pieces) Repaired or unit replaced
all these "accidents" will be fixed free of charge and basically you could go bowling with your laptop and they will fix it so long as they can't prove you intentionally threw your laptop down the lane to knock the pins down [8D] . so Make sure you get this warranty it is like $119 but completely worth it consider how easy it is to break a LCD screen and how much they cost to fix. By the way the limited warranty they offer I think you have to get to get the complete care warranty, the limited only covers like software problems and hardware not breaks, accidents, spills etc. SO GET THE COMPLETE CARE!!! and for those fo you who already bought your laptop and don't have complete care you can upgrade your warranty within 30 days like I did!

    Dell Inspiron 9100
    P4 3.0, 15.4 UXGA Wide Screen, 512 DDR SDRAM 400MHz, 128MB ATI Mobility Radeon 9700, 60 GB Ultra ATA HD, 24x CD-RW/DVD, TrueMobile1400 WLAN!

manufacturers often make money on some of these expensive warranty's, but the flipside of that is customers like ourselves feel a heck of a lot more secure knowing that if disaster occurs with the laptop we put a lot of money into then the manufacturer is responsible for fixing or replacing it. It's like insurance really. If you've got the money, extended warranties and complete care packages are certainly worth looking into.

A better and cheaper idea is to get a personal articles insurance policy on your notebook. Don't get a rider or anything that is somehow attached to your homeowners policy as there is a big deductible. I insure all my camera gear and just added my notebook to the policy. Adding the $2000 notebook increased the cost by about $3/month or $39/year. There is no deductible and everything except an act of war is covered. I use state farm and your costs may vary as different areas have different risk factors. It is a much better deal than going through the manufacturer, it is cheaper and if anything happens to my notebook, the replacement does not have to be from the same company...I'm free to pick any notebook I like from any manufacturer.

Jack/bootleg2go, that sounds like a good idea. I'll look into that...

ok does That just covers loss of laptop? the warranty people are asking about is not loss but mechanical parts of a laptop. accidents do happen something not your fault. your kid your wife etc, lcd screen cost more than $400 and it don't take much to damage one. at $269 and $119 you get complete coverage except for loss to repair anything that doesn't work on your laptops even keys that pop off.

You cannot buy Accidental care after 30 days but you can extend your warranty from 1 year to 3 year before it ends.

The complete care option is one of the big pluses with ordering my Inspiron 9100. I didn't have that with my Inspiron 8000 but I did use the warranty repair a couple times in the three years I've owned it.
I think four year peace of mind is worth a little. I priced HP, Toshiba, Sony, and their prices were higher and the care packages cost more and didn't cover as much. My 9100 shipped two days early and it is expected by Friday or Monday.

    Hi zxcvb,
The personal articles insurance policy I was talking about does not include normal general failure or the notebook, but it covers everything else, like dropping it, water or pepsi damage, theft, just leaving it soemwhere and losing it, backing over it with the car or if it falls out of the raft when you hit the white water. Basically evrything except an act of war or a general unit failure from no known outside cause. Now that is real piece of mind for $38/year and if you ever need to use the warranty, you can replace the unit you can take the money and buy any make or model of replacement you want. Try that with a Dell complete care warranty ;)

The complete care coverage is worth it. my 3 yr old spilled a drink on my IBM T30 keyboard and fried it instantly. I was really surprised that the legendary IBM build quality didn't take it. I've had accidents with lesser notebooks ( Toshiba Tecra ) without a problem.

It was $1200 to repair the IBM.

hey I was wondering, can warranty be upgraded AFTER purchasing the laptop? I wish to keep initial costs down.. is it possible to buy a 1 year warranty now, and then when it's almost up, upgrade it to another two years?

Yes, you can extended your warranty anytime before the standard 1 year ends.
