Two or three months ago, I suddenly began to see a pop-up of an ATI Graphics Screen coming up at start up, saying that I did not have permission to change Catalyst Control Setting and referred me to Administrator.

This last Sunday (ironically four days after the three years under warranty, two of which were paid extension) my Inspiron E1505 Intel® Core™ Duo Proc T2500 (2GHz/667MHz/2 X 1MB L2 Cache) 2GB Shared Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 533MHZ, 2 DIMM 256MB ATI MOBILITY™ RADEON® X1400 HyperMemory™ 120GB 5400rpm SATA Hard Drive suddenly started getting blue screen NMI: Parity Check / Memory Parity Errors at start up . I contacted Dell Support and paid a one incident extension of service, so they would even talk to me, and was connected to a very good female technician in Japan. She spent nearly four hours on the phone with me and she rapidly ran diagnostics and said everything is okay. Everything is okay? She rephrased and said that it does not appear to be hardware related. We took out one card, then put it back and took out the other, exchanged them around. We next flashed the BIOS up to A17. She then installed new driver for the ATI X1400. All of these actions had no long lasting impact to the problem.

She then said that she would have to do some more research and call me back the next evening around same time. I found out two nights later that she had the exact same problem with another customer that next night and couldn’t call me as promised. The next night I brought my laptop from the office so I could chat with Dell Support this time instead of juggle the phone. I was not able to link to the same technician this time but received another that even though she worked hard, she was not as thorough, knowledgeable, or cordial as the first I had the pleasure of working with.

This newly assigned Dell Support Technician arranged to provide me a link to Dell Drivers where they had loaded not only the newer version driver for the ATI X1400, but two older versions as well. It was the theory of the first technician that possibly installing an earlier version of the driver for the ATI X1400 256MB Mobility Radeon HyperMemory might correct the problem and I did initially get a clear screen one or two times out of dozen or so startups while working with this new technician, but the resolution was small, the colors deep, and still no way to adjust it.

After installing the older driver for the ATI X1400, only minimal temporary improvement was seen but would return to either parity errors or low grade graphics at next start up. This new tech said the only recourse was to know reload OS which she would glad to help; however, I was not provided OS disc when the system was delivered, but she offered to sell me one. I told her that it would take a couple days to get all of my personal files off the E1505 because I was unable to write to CD or DVD because of the system errors and would be forced to upload to a 2GB thumb drive and download to my work laptop. She never thought of suggesting partial system restores through XP, Dell, and/or Norton Ghost (preloaded but I never licensed it) restore utilities.

I DO NOT WANT TO RELOAD MY OS SYSTEM. I have read dozens of blogs in the last few days that report that card movement around in laptop, replacement card installs, new hard drives, and OS reinstall all did not remedy the situation; therefore, I do not want to go through that for nothing.

Before I forget, I want to praise the first Dell Support Technician Maria Criselda did all of her thorough testing and diagnostics by directly taking over my desktop remotely. The second technician didn’t suggest linking or even consider it. And here is true devotion to work, Maria even called me on my phone, while I was working with other technician via chat, to follow up and make sure her recommendation was working. Since I couldn’t keep both technicians simultaneously, I felt that I needed to stay with the one in chat since I had just spent the couple previous hours with her and let Maria take another call. I really regret that decision.

What it is most ironic through this whole endeavor is that Dell really gave me the impression that they perceived this to be a new problem. I found hard to swallow since I have already read hundreds of problem reports in the last three days, identical to mine. And even funnier, when I attempted to research this problem in Dell Forums on their website the last three days, every time I have clicked on discussion on this subject , I get error saying their website is down on this Forum Discussion not available. lol

For the most part, most all my regular startups now either result in NMI: Parity Check / Memory Parity Error or start up mode like appearance with low resolution screen that is grainy with lines as if started up in safe mode. My E1505 is pretty much useless right now.

I have given up pretty much on Dell Support since that last contact. I have spent now the last ninety six hours in tech blogs trying to find solutions. Two experts suggested to administer partial restores with either Windows XP or Dell system restore utilities. I attempted and completed a three month back restore and a six month with the Dell utility which had no impact on the problem. I also found that Norton Ghost (pre-installed at delivery by Dell, but I still had not licensed it to this day) has restoral points in the past or restore to original factory condition. I want to avoid doing restore to original factory condition or a OS reinstall because I have some software installed that I no longer have the programming disc like Photoshop CS3 (which I had dual work/home licensing when originally installed) that I would lose with reloading OS System or going back to far.

I am really having a terrible experience with all of this. I have always had excellent results with Dell products but here I am where I cannot use my E1505 laptop in its current condition , and only four days outside of my extended warranty.

I just do not know what to do now. I cannot afford to purchase a new laptop right now. And I have to have my home laptop up and running daily without problems in order to support post work activities in several web communities and an online proprietorship. I cannot find a specific resolution to the problem (preferably written so functional people like me, with limited technical skills, can understand and hopefully, carry out. And shipping out or taking into a computer repair shop does not seem feasible either right now. Somebody out there has to have a viable solution. If you do and you share it with me, I will never forget it or keep it to myself like my praises of Maria with Dell mentioned earlier.

    HELP ME! HELP ME PLEASE!

Calm down, you do not need a new laptop, and you do not need to reinstall the operating system. It sounds like one of two things,
    1) its an early onset of the graphics processor dying. - This can be changed, you will need a new graphics card. The model number is: FBFM1017013
    2) its a driver solution - I think this is not the problem.
I am using Dell drivers series 8.261-060523a1-033841C (A03) Its provided on the Dell Drivers disc. I can try uploading them to you through rapidshare

Now you can tell if its a driver problem or not.
When you turn your laptop on, does the BIOS look normal?
The Dell screen flashes. Then windows loads.
Does the loading of windows look normal?

If the graphics look all messed up from startup, than its a hardware problem. If the windows loading bar is clear and normal, but than the graphics get all messed up, than its a software issue.

Catalyst control center can be a pain sometimes, so I disable it, by shutting it off in MSCONFIG
Go to the run command and type MSCONFIG in

In the startup tab, shut off "cli"
In the Services tab, shut off "ATi hotkey poller"

You will need to restart. Hopefully that helps a bit.

If the drivers do not help, it is a hardware issue, and you will have to change the graphics card out.
It takes about an hour to get it out and a new one in,

    Good luck,

Oh, when getting catalyst control center to work properly, as in not give the error message on startup. You need to update Microsoft dot net framework to version 2.0

The only time that the screen is error free is the two or three seconds that the blue stripe with Dell written on it appears across the top of the screen. The Dell BIOS screen and Windows logo screen are the right resolution but have vertical lines from top to bottom.

The drivers you refer to the ATI drivers? I have several that have been downloaded lately. Right now I am having a few problems even accessing th einterneyt since attempting partial restores so after I hear from you and I reverse the last partial restore, hopefully I can get to Dell website to get what you affirm.

I am afraid I have no idea how to update Microsoft dot net framework to version 2.0

I forgot to mention that remember that I am only being able to start in safe mode which contributes heavily to the graininess and vertical lines.

Did you get a chance to determine how I can run MISCONFIG if I cannot see Start button?

I Removed the ATI Catalyst Control program (leaving the ATI Remove Utility and the ATI Mobility Driver) intact and then went to Update Drive in the Device Manager and manually chose the following driver which I had downloaded:

    R128573.exe CX_33841 Version 8.261-060523a1-033841C, A03 Release Date 07/13/06

This did not resolve the problem, so I am going to update the driver to an older version.

Does the previous driver have to be uninstalled before updating or does the action Update Driver take care of that for you?

How do you have no start button?
I dont know how to get around to it.

I reinstalled Windows on my E1505 today.
I noticed that even with the Windows generic driver, you can get 1024x768 resolution clear.
So remove all of your graphics drivers and use the generic windows one.
That way you can narrow the problem down.

Have you run any antivirus software on the harddrive?
You can physically remove the harddrive and plug it into a USB enclosure, or into a desktop.
Scan the drive, you may have a virus on there which is reaking havoc.
Cause seriously even if your drivers are defective you shouldn't have the problems you are getting. Windows would have automatically kicked in and used the default drive.

No Start button because of the resolution and I did eventually find a way to get to a Run prompt but until I decide to reinstall Catalyst, it is moot point right now.

After I remove all of the ATI Drivers, and restart, will genreix windows graphic driver install on it's own?

Yes, I believe so - but you'll be limited in terms of possible resolutions to choose from. To bring up a run prompt simply press windows key + R.

Once ATi drivers are removed, windows will use the default graphics driver.

It will post 800x600 resolution, but it can be adjusted to 1024x768 on the windows drivers.

I didnt know Windows+R did that - thanks

You guys are great with your timely and informative responses. So good that I am now at a tough decision point and am so frustrated.

I also need to mention that yesterday I experienced, during the majority of restarts, see the system eventually go to blue screen parity error, almost 100% of the time when starting with updated driver and full start, as opposed to starting in safe mode. I was able to get it to start properly with a Windows default Video driver installing, but thirty minutes to a hour later to would also go to blue screen parity error too.

My very sharp hardware guy in IS with me at my company, read everything everyone has been saying here; as well as, other blogs which I have copied him on. He tells me that since I have vertical lines on the screen during start up when the Windows XP logo appears, every time I start up, and despite preventing Catalyst from running at Start Up, removing Catalyst all together, updating the ATI X1400 Drivers to each of the last four driver versions, and then uninstalling the ATI X1400 drive all together and allowing Windows to default a driver, that the odds of the problem being resolved with an OS reinstall, compared to purchasing and installing a new Video Card, are like 5% to 95%. I do not really want to reinstall the OS unless I have to. I really have confidence in your recommendations. I question recommendations for reloading OS when they come from Dell Support because they have a track record of always recommending a reload of OS system, whenever they are out of resolutions to propose.

Tell me straight you guys, based on everything I have told you, does it really sound like reloading the OS system will resolve -or- should I be asking for your recommendation of a replacement Video Card and where I can get the best price?

I am about 80% sure that your problem is still hardware related. If you buy a replacement graphics card, you can install it, and see if the new card makes a difference. Putting a replacement card in, will work with your current operating system, you do not need to reinstall windows to see if the new card works. If it doesnt fix the problem, against what I think, than you can always resell it on ebay.
There is a X1400 on ebay for $50 with free shipping.
    http://cgi.ebay.com/Dell-E1505-6400-Laptop-256MB-ATI-X1400-Video-Card-WF148_W0QQitemZ370255988128QQcmdZViewItemQQptZPCC_Video_TV_Cards?hash=item5634fa05a0&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14

If $50 is too much, you can always install a lower powered X1300:
(This will also work in your system, and doesnt require a windows reinstall to work)
    http://cgi.ebay.com/Dell-E1505-6400-Laptop-128MB-ATI-X1300-Video-Card-BD_W0QQitemZ230374270917QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item35a36067c5&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14

I am fairly confident in saying that the memory on your graphics core has become corrupt in one of the cells. That would cause the errors you are getting

    Good luck,

Agreed, if you still get the problem with different drivers then I'd suggest it's a hardware issue. Boot into the BIOS and leave it there for an hour - does the system shut down at any point? Do you see the lines still at this point? If so, then I'm pretty sure it's hardware related.

Sorry that I have not returned back here to update you but today I finally got my laptop back up and running. Some of you were correct in your diagnosis that my ATI X-1400 needed to be replaced. I bought on eBay for $38.00 an it resolved all the problems I was experiencing.

Again I wish to thank everyone for their help.

There are two things people need to know about older model Dell's such as the E1705 and E1505 - these models are prone to graphics card failures due to bugs in the BIOS and how the cooling system is controlled, as well as nVidia cards having a manufacturing flaw. The type of problems you're having are when the graphics card starts to fail. Here's a link to a couple of related forum threads on the NMI Parity Check issue, and the defective graphics card and BIOS:

Manufacturing flaw in nVidia chips: http://www.zdnetasia.com/news/hardware/0,39042972,62045067,00.htm
Dell extends warranty by 1 year for some systems with nVidia cards and releases BIOS fix for some: http://en.community.dell.com/blogs/...ate-limited-warranty-enhancement-details.aspx
nVidia press release/one time write off for defective unit replacements: http://www.nvidia.com/object/io_1215037160521.html

We started to see problems similar to this as early as 2006 when systems first were designed with these problems: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=92036
    *** Hardware Malfunction
Call your hardware vendor for support
    NMI: Parity Check/Memory Parity Error

I have an E1705 and Dell has agreed to replace it with a newer model if necessary, I'm glad I'm still in warranty.

    Hi
    Be gentle with me
I am getting this NMI Parity Blue Screen error problem
Have Inspiron 9400 since Jan 07
I don't know what graphics card I have or how to update my drivers/bios
    Can someone tell me?
I haven't updated anything since I had the model direct from dell
I would like to update the memory but not if the machine is going to pack up soon.
Also the fan seems to overheat a lot.

    Thanks

Dell weren't interested as my warranty ran out in January.I did a system test today and got a load of error messages.
I hope someone can point me in the direction of where to go with this.

As I said before my computer keeps overheating and fan cuts in very quickly- sometimes I get a blue screen with NMI parity on at other times I get 100% CPU useage and have to shut down.

Very grateful if someone can point me in the right direction.
