I disable the Catalyst from my system. I have the latest driver from Dell for E1705 but it doesn't work.
Seems like this computer won't work with me. Thanks for suggestion.

Just had it again with my NV 9700GS uptime 4/5 hours did it while i was reading a site, with Dells own drivers.
Just installed NV's/Dell's own drivers 92.77 will try these!!
http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=12177
This sucks!!!!
Edit: Been thinking i never had this for a whole month!! a week or so before this i installed the Bluetooth 355 Module (XP drivers) i might take it out and see how it goes after this gfx driver test. -

Sad news, I just called Dell to return my system. DHL or UPS might come to my house and pick up the system and it took like a month to get my refund back.
The technician called me today... she ask if i want to send the system to repair. I said no, i want a refund. They she'll pass me to her supervisor. He suggest to give another replacement for me but I said no. I don't think I will get any upgrade as of I only have 1 yr mail-in warranty, no at-home service.
So finally they passed me to customer care, everything goes smoothly no question asked. Return ID was created and ready to ship.
I don't know what to buy this time for replacement of my Dell. I'll either buy Asus, Toshiba, or Hp ... but they don't offer 17" at good price. So let's see if there is any new deal coming up.
Good luck in fixing this issue guys. I've been research these BSOD since May and haven't found a solution yet.
PS: I thought this because of Bluetooth Module but it won't. Another thing I can think of is the Wireless module of Intel. I'm using Atheros wireless now but it's only for 4 days. -
Dear Stephen
Today Lenovo representative called me here in Kuwait and
Asked me politely if I can visit them I said Ok so I went there and they offered me chocolates coffee apology and a brand new T60!
I hope I don't see that ugly error again thank you my friend I hope
This problem gets solved for all our friends in this forum. -
My advice go Lenovo! -
I don't know about levono yet. Thanks for suggestion.
Today I'm waiting for DHL to pick up the computer, I put back the intel wireless card. Right after than 10mins the system suddenly crash. (D@MM) . I think it's a coincident. I've been running clean windows xp reinstallation for about 5 days so it's probably the Crash period has come to its time.
NxMan, u're lucky one. They invite you to their office and offer a new computer. How nice. I wish Dell invite me to their store and give me a new XPS instead. -
Ok. I just got it again today. This time using a Gigabyte GN-WI01GT Mini-PCIe wireless card. I will be getting a hold of dell and seeing if they will replace the RAM. The computer was just sitting idle this time. The only common things between the 2 incidents are the fact that they were connected to my wireless network and that the running software is the same. The system has been plagued by odd crashes too which points to a possible RAM issue. Right now I am running the Windows Blue Screen set of tests to see if any of them fail. So far they have all passed however.
-
UPS didn't come today so I'm still keeping my laptop for next 2 days and wait til Monday if there's anybody come to pick it up.
ShinJi257, is that Gigabyte better than intel. I got an Atheros card from china but it didn't show much improvement. ( Little bit of Off-topic here).
This BSOD is not because of RAM it's something else. -
Dear Khanhfat
I confirm what you said the BSOD is not because of RAM problem
when Lenovo took my notebook I showed them a picture of it
with BSOD visible which I took using my Mobile camera they told me the
picture I took was very helpful and to confirm your theory regarding the ram
they told me that they replaced the ram and they ran PC Doctor and there was nothing and second day they actually decided to send it back to me but before doing that they run WMP 11 for few minutes and the system crashed! BSOD good they saw it themselves!!! They told me they sold more than 1000
T60's with my specs and this is the first time they see this problem and it’s either a defective motherboard or a defective display card which they suspect the most. -
I ran the full suite of tests in Dell Diagnostics for a Blue Screen in windows and it tested the whole nine yards. Took it a good 4 hours to complete. It came up with nothing. All tests passed. I reseated the memory cards, switched them, and uninstalled i8kfangui. Some forums suggested a possible software conflict can also cause this so I took that one out. If it happens again I will be getting on dell chat. -
Update
I received the BSOD on my New replacement T60 while watching vids on mitacafe.com!!! i will stick with this machine even if it gives me the BSOD every minute! hopefully a new Bios update or driver update will fix the problem. -
Hello; I've been having the same problems with my Dell 6400 (aka E1505) ever since I bought it in September. The problem always seems to occur when I'm surfing the web using the wireless at home. I went to university in October where I use a wired internet connection and I haven't ever had the error there, even though I use it every day.
After I got home in early December though and started using the wireless again, the problems have started again. It tends to happen at least once a day.
I used contacted Dell and I went through the diagnostics and reseating the memory over the phone. However, a few hours later, the dreaded BSOD appeared again. I emailed the guy I'd been talking to over the phone and asked for a technician. Despite his promise that he'd get one to me the next day, it took over a week for the guy to arrive.
He replaced my RAM, the video card (Radeon Mobility X1400) and the processor. He told me that if it happened again, I should re-install Windows.
Of course, later that day, it did.
I haven't yet done a clean install since I can't face the hassle of backing up all my data and redownloading and installing all the updated drivers again.
It seems like I've tried everything; I've updated the BIOS and I'm on the latest video (and wireless card) drivers from the Dell website.
I go back to university later this week so I doubt I'll be able to sort it all out before then or before the end of term. I'm very paranoid that it's going to crash mid-essay. -
Welcome Harry1W
its because of Radeon Mobility X1400 but untill now no resolution to this problem. -
OK then; am I right to surmise that this issue has arisen as a result of incompatibility between the video and the system setup? I'd see it very unlikely that is something inherently wrong with the hardware itself alone, given that the replacement of the X1400 didn't help to solve the problem.
Do you think that a clean install of Windows, therefore, is the only option - at least until Dell/ATI pull their fingers out to get a driver fix? I wouldn't want to reinstall just to find that the problem reoccurs though!
Could it be connected to the wireless adapter - possibly an incompatibility with the X1400? I'm just clutching at straws - but the incidence of the problem does seem uncanilly correlated with the use of wireless broadband. I seem to remember reading earlier on this thread someone else mentioning that the problem seemed to occur when they were using the Internet; I don't think it's ever happened to me when I've been using the laptop with the wireless turned off. -
reinstalling windows didnt fix the problem for me. currently dell has replaced 3 of my hard drive. my orginal drive failed the dell diagnostic test somehow, when i pass the exact same test 4 hours previous to that 2nd test, the 2nd hard drive has weird clicking noise so dell sent me a new a hard drive but it was IDE and not SATA so i had them send me another one. i am still getting those NMI errors though.
i have also played around with the ram, i had the laptop run on 1 stick 512 mb of ram and swapped them when i encountered a NMI error and it still occurred. these are the default dell ram.
i ended up sending the laptop to the dell depot and the blockheads over there basically returned the laptop to me untouched. they claim that there was something wrong with the hard drive but they did not have the one that i needed at the depot so they would send the hard drive in a day from somewhere else (this is where they ended up sending the IDE hard drive instead of SATA).
the whole process is seriously pissing me off. not only did they literally returned the laptop without replacing a single thing, the person who packed my laptop in to return literally just threw it in the box. when the laptop was returned to me, one of the plastic grid thingy for the fan in the back was broken and for some reason 4 of my keys on the keyboard were broken (they were working fine before i sent it in, i use end/home/pg up/down a lot) . so yea they basically returned my laptop untouched and ended breaking a bunch of crap as well.
so yea i had to spend another hour on the phone with dell to get a new keyboard and they are basically doing nothing about the damage done to the plastic thing they broke. college starts for me again on january 20th so i don't have much time left to send the laptop back and forth anymore. -
I don't have time to send that laptop back and forth either. My college starts on 16th...
I sent to the repair depot last week and they didn't change anything. They just boot up the Windows and run their diagnosis test.. but this error can't be determine BY RUN THE DIAGNOSIS SOFTWARE TO TEST THE HARDWARE.
It's only happend when you actually using the windows and work with it. If it's the ATI drivers, Has anyone try to run windows with NO ATI drivers?
All of the story I've read above and all the testing that Dell suggested me , I've been through them all. If you can't stand it no longer... just return it and get some other laptop and use it. I wonder if this issue affect on all inspiron or 50% of them. I doubt that there're many E1705 1505 out there has the same problem , which would drive the owner nuts. -
OK... so I stumbled across your forum thread while trying to figure out what the problem is that I kept getting. I have a fully loaded thinkpad T60p that I got for graduation about 8 months ago. Up until now it has been working like a charm. I decided to upgrade it by buying another gig stick of RAM. First I tried PNY. However, after about 10 minutes of wonderful speed and gaming it would crash my computer in various ways. I figured, hey its probably a bad stick.. got a refund.. and this time I mail ordered some nice Corsair.
So, I install the Corsair today and My laptop runs very smoothely for about an hour. Then while running an online game, I had that awful blue screen with the "NMI: Parity Check blah blah" error. I restarted.. and pretty much every 20 minutes it kept doing that. Well.. I decided to test my new ram by switching it out default stick. The only RAM my laptop had at that point was my new stuff. It ran fine for about 2 hours. So i stuck in the default stick in the 2nd slot this time.. and it ran for about 30 minutes and gave me that dang error again.
Is it possible that my 2nd RAM slot is faulty? or do you think it is an ATI/ PCI bus error? (which seems to be the general consensus). I am quickly running out of ideas of how to resolve this. I really want my 2nd gig of RAM! -
-
It seems that there are no definite solutions then. Replacing the graphics card, memory, processor and hard drive hasn't worked. Updating to the latest drivers and even reinstalling Windows doesn't seem to work.
I'm so annoyed with Dell; how can they continue to sell such shoddy equipment when they must know too well that this is such a prevalent problem?
I think that if it happens again, I'm going to ring up and ask for a new laptop altogether. I'm not going to go to the trouble of backing everything up and reinstalling Windows just to find that it the problem reoccurs. -
I hope your new replacement work. Don't stop saying like "your diagnosis instruction does not help to solve this issue. I want another laptop". If you have such 3 replacements like me and all 3 crashes , ask them for an XPS intead. I've heard that XPS still have this problem but it's minor. How come other's laptop doesn't have this error? It makes me want to make a poll on popular Dell forums and ask If they have ever experiencing this error or not.
Even 7900GS has this error so... I have no clue what is Dell doing for research to fix this error. -
Ok, glad I'm not the only one, but hate that it's happened to so many people.
I got a Dell Inspiron 9200 with Windows XP, Bluetooth installed, 1.66 GHz, 2.00 GB for work back in June of 2006. Maybe after a few days of out of the box use, that's when I first saw the message. Then after that, it was coming up maybe once a week. It would happen at random times like watching a video, checking e-mail, playing spider solitare, just anything would cause it. Being as I hate to call Dell for anything now, I just delt with it for awhile. Then finally, I started getting it about every day, so I decided to reload the laptop and install updated drivers to everything.
Everything went fine with the reinstalling except my Microsoft Bluetooth Mouse. For the longest time, it would connect for a few minutes then suddenly stop responding. The NMI: Parity Check error never came back. After about a month of missing my Bluetooth Mouse, I went to Dell's website and downloaded and installed the Dell Bluetooth Wireless Keyboard and Mouse Bundle (even though I bought the Microsoft Bluetooth Mouse and Keyboard seperate). Well, it fixed my mouse problem, but then the NMI: Parity Check error came back.
I don't know what else to look for. I read quickly through everyone's posts to see if something caught my eye. I thought I would post my experience to see if anyone might have a clue where this is coming from. It might not be the Bluetooth driver, but it's funny how I didn't see the message at all until I reinstalled that. -
A month is long enough for the BSOD to crash again. I think this error is like a disease, if you have one laptop crash like this, it'll continue to crash on other ones that you got from Dell as replacement.
UPS didn't come to pick up my laptop today. I wonder what is Dell doing in schedule these pickups. I have to talk to them on chat tonight to return this as soon as possible to get my money back and buy another system. It took like a month to get a refund (wTF??)
PS : Kendo, please more specific about your system . Does the system equip with ATi cards/? And how come it's 9200 model instead of 9300 or 9400? Is ther a mistype or something? -
That was a mistype. I spent all weekend trying to get a virus off of an Inspiron 9200.
My system is an Inspiron 9400/E1705
Intel Core Duo T2300 at 1.66 GHz
TrueLife LCD 17 Inch Widescreen
ATI Mobility Radeon X1400 256MB
120 GB Serial ATA Seagate
DVD +/- RW 8X Phillips
Windows XP Professional
But yeah, seems like everyone's pointing to the ATI Mobility Radeon as the source of this problem.
Come to think of it, back when I started getting the BSOD everyday was after I replaced the LCD and downloaded updated drivers from ATI's website. I had to change the LCD because there was what looked like to be an eyelash in it. I never saw it until I changed my background to white.
Hope this helps. -
I too have the same problem as everyone else on here. I just bought my new E1705 3 weeks ago and have seen this screen about 5 times already. Only seems to happen when I close the lid at night and wake up the next morning to a BSOD. I see most of you have the ATI video card but I have the NVIDIA 7900GS card installed and it is doing this as well. I'm guessing since ATI and the NVIDIA cards are doing it that its prob not the video card that's the problem. I was going to call Dell figuring I just had bad memory and have them send me 2 new 1GB sticks but apparently that isnt working either. Has anyone figured out a solution to this because I'd rather stay away from calling Dell support because I can never understand the the support representative on the phone. These are brand new notebooks and if everyone is having the same problem Dell needs to do somethin about this, maybe they will send us all XPS's if we keep complaining!
-
I hope they would send XPS due to the problem we're having.
Did you reinstall windows after you receive your laptop. DOes anybody run on stock windows of Dell that is still crashing?
Actually, the BSOD crash on 7900GS as well. But there're more users with ATI X1400 crash than 7900GS crash. HOw come Dell ignore this issue ? I wonder If any one with E1705 1505 has seen this crash once in their system?
There're another thread of a user who want to replace his Video card with a quadro. Due to incompatible Quadro card, he receive BSOD Memory parity error immediately when he install Quadro card in the motherboard. There is no problem with 7900gs when he put it back. Seems like There's an error between the Video card and the motherboard. One of the two must be incompatible with each other that causes this.
Seems like some of us who decide to keep this system will get used to this error and accept it. There 's no trick of fix to stop this issue. Dell should gather the best computer technicians out there and award a grand prize for whoever can fix this. -
Played 6+ hours of BF2142, dl'ed 1 gig off utorrent all good so far. -
I completely uninstalled my ATI drivers and all related ATI software rebooted and reinstalled the latest drivers from the Dell Support website last week and I haven't had a crash since, despite using the computer for pretty intensive tasks for long periods (including using wireless internet seemed to be previously correlated with the crashes).
No guarantees that it will go on this way but seeing that it was crashing at least once a day up until this point, I am feeling positive. Perhaps it might be worth a try?
I'll report back if I have a crash again. -
I had the same problem with my M1210.
Searching the web, I found that all you need to do in many cases is take out the RAM for a couple of seconds and put it back in.
BTW, I had contacted Dell support, which confirmed it was a RAM problem and had offered directly to replace the RAM.
Hope that's of use! -
HoriZon-UK, did your laptop even crash once or so? (Note: He's running Dell Stock windows) -
6 times on stock Dell install been fine past week so far with nv 9700GS drivers.
I did do a clean up of Windows minds got rid of all the crap and went into the registry and had a good clean in their too. -
I have had this error 4 times now, my system is:
XPS M1710
Nvidia 7900GTX 512Mb Graphics
2 Gb 667Mb Ram
100Gb 7200rpm HDD
I do not have Blue tooth and I have the Pre n wireless card but i have had the error while using both a wired connection and wireless , i recently changed my screen due to a fault but the errors started before that and i get one about every 2 weeks for the last 6 weeks. The computer worked fine for the first 2 months before this started, although reading this thread i am glad that it does not happen more regulary.
Dell say it could be the memory modules or the motherboard. I am wondering if it is a manufacture fault across many motherboards.
I will follow this thread with interest. -
rossi_69, Welcome to the forum of Faulty Dell laptop with BSOD. YOu should call Dell support and send you another computer. You're not the one with XPS has this error. I know there're many hardcore gamer over Notebookforums has the same system with the same error. Right now we'll need horizon UK to verify if the stock WIndows of Dell runs fine , or the clean reinstall Windows causes this problem.
-
Just to clarify i haven't tried it on a clean install all my cashes have been the default Dell install and drivers now using none Dell drivers for the gfx card.
-
Update!
I sent back my second T60 back to Lenovo!BSOD and dots on the Screen Lenovo technician told me that previous CoreDue T60's with the
ATI X1400 never had a problem maybe its a conflict between the ATI X1400
And the new Core2Due processer!!! -
Hello
I apologize in advance for this long post
I have been a long time lurker for over a year of this awesome website (it helped me when I purchased my Inspiron 9400) but after seeing this thread I could not help but join in since I am also being affected by this NMI parity error on my Inspiron 9400 since the beginning of November 2006 after having my laptop run almost problem free since I purchased it back in February of 2006.
I upgraded the video card back in October 2006 from the GeForce 7800 to the GeForce 7900 (I had ordered the card from Dell Spare Parts) installed it and everything worked fine for about 3weeks, I played games like FEAR at MAX resolution, MAX settings, MAX AA etc...
Later on I upgraded the BIOS from version A03 at the time to the A04 version and that's when 2 days after that BIOS upgrade I started to get the NMI parity error, sometimes I would get it only once a week or sometimes it could be once every 48 hours.
I tried everything: running Dell diagnostics, running memtest, reseating the memory (everything checked out fine with my 2 GIG of OCZ memory), reinstalling the video drivers using drive cleaner pro but was still getting the BSOD.
I have finally opened up a case file with Dell technical support and the last thing that I am trying on my end (before Dell is suppose to send out a possible motherboard and video card replacement) I have gotten rid of the Dell drivers and I have installed the video drivers from NVidia's website. After researching the NMI parity error I have found that for some people at least this solves the problem
even though there are those for who it does not work...its been a month now since I have installed the NVidia drivers and so far no more parity error...this is the longest I have gone without having this BSOD error since it first started
I am still keeping watch over the situation to see if this will turn out to be a permanent fix for me or if the parity error comes back... I'll keep posting in this thread to keep you guys informed it might be useful for those who have not tried this step yet of using the NVidia drivers instead of the Dell drivers.
Finally I would like to point out this thread over at the Dell forums as I feel it could potentially help us in getting a solution to this problem from Dell, for those who have not seen this thread over at Dell's forum it is a DEFINITE MUST READ for anyone experiencing this NMI parity error.
http://www.dellcommunity.com/suppor...message.id=4502&view=by_date_ascending&page=1
The thread I believe is 21 pages long but just to sum things up this thread was started by a bunch of Dell Precision owners who started experiencing the NMI parity error on their own systems, after going through the usual steps of debugging and troubleshooting i.e. checking their RAM, reinstalling drivers, having their systems replaced by Dell without the error going away, they finally put pressure on Dell to escalate this issue to their engineering team which ended up discovering some sort of conflict or error with the graphic card on Precision system and the Dell BIOS, Dell then released a new BIOS to fix this issue (even though not all users were being affected) and now their NMI parity error is gone for good. I can't help but think something similar might be going on here as well with our Inspirons and some XPS systems.
In any case thank for your time I feel this thread is very important because there are quite a few people out there suffering from this error that Dell MUST be aware of but no concrete solution as of yet
Thanks -
Yeah I got this NMI Parity / Memory Parity BSOD on the very first day when I got my E1705 (C2D 2.0, 2 GB, ATI X1400) back in October, in the stock Win XP MCE installation, and then again yesterday in Vista RC2 (been running dual boot Vista RC1 / stock XP MCE for a while, upgraded RC1 to RC2 two days ago).
So it looks like a BIOS issue? -
Don't know if it is a BIOS issue with our Inspirons I was just stating what was going on with some users getting the NMI parity error on their Precision M70 systems (Correction on my previous post ,I was re reading their thread and what fixed the issue was a release of a new video driver by Dell and not a BIOS revision) in any case it was mentioned in one of their posts about some conflict between the BIOS and the previous Dell video driver
-
Today i sent ATI a complaint ticket linked this thread.
-
WE should sticky this thread... Lucky for the ones who doesn't get this error.
Thanks for the helpful information Eessie. Why don't we put the Dell's Engineer team work on this issue like they did with Precision Model. May be I'll claim back my E1705.
Like some other users suggested from The DELL Inc forum , they went to other Dell's country website and checked other older driver available there. I'll come over UK site and search for some drivers. IF they have A0x version that is older than now.
Core Duo , Core 2 Duo is all affected by this particular BSOD. I remember I was using A02 Bios but it's still crash. I haven't got a chance to use Bios A01 or 00 yet.
Even the Video driver, Dell removed the old one away.
Has anyone tell Dell about this particular issue? and link them this link. -
Yes this thread should definitely be made a sticky since it is an issue that is obviously affecting a lot of people (look at the size of this thread already) not including those users who have not even reported this problem probably thinking it is something wrong on their end. In any case since the NVidia drivers have been working error free for me for a month now I will just keep watch over this and report back to Dell technical support on the improvement of my situation, you can try on your end and see if the other Dell countries website still have older versions of the 7900 drivers and see if those work
The only thing that bothers me about all of this is WHY is it that this error shows up on only some E1705/9400 laptops and not the others?
For example, my sister also owns an Inspiron 9400 with the 7900 GeForce card using the Dell stock drivers and so far she has never gotten this NMI parity error (she bought hers sometime back in May or June of 2006)
the only major differences between our 2 laptops however is that she is still using the original BIOS that came with the laptop when she ordered it (BIOS version A01) and she has never updated it since then whereas I have always updated the BIOS when a new version came out including the most recent one (BIOS version A06) not sure if it has anything to do with what's going on but we may be closer to the solution if say this problem has never occurred on an Inspiron 9400/E1705 using the A01 BIOS indicating that there may be some sort of conflict between the newer BIOS versions and the Dell Stock drivers...
So the question is this: has ANYBODY gotten this NMI parity error while using the A01 BIOS AND the Geforce 7900 card?
Its too bad I cannot convince my sister to upgrade her BIOS to version A06, because lets say she did and then all of a sudden a few days later she starts getting the NMI parity error then we would have put our finger on the source of the problem. -
You may be on to something. I have the same as your sister, no BSOD with A01 and stock drivers.
-
So the Final conclusion is the BIOS? Unluckily , Dell removed it from their site. Does any body have a backup of A01 bios? This makes me feel like get my E1705 again.
From all the suspection from MOtherboard, HDD, Video card, Ram.. til now. The problem that bugs Dell inspiron is that freaking BIOS.
But most of the new Dell is flashed with A03 or A02? SO this error would affect pretty much lots of inspiron out there. I think I'll write Dell a letter saying that I want to get my E1705 back along with a Video card upgrade + BIOS flash to older version. -
http://support.us.dell.com/support/...eid=R120246&formatcnt=2&libid=0&fileid=160228
I would wait a bit to see what shakes out. Bios updates can be fatal if things go wrong. -

NMI: Parity Check/ Memory Parity Error -- System crash
