Hey all, the deals today are just too good. $500 plus ~200MIR? That is sick!

So I need a laptop. But which one should I get? 8600/600m/700m? I'll be doing coding, writing and surfing. No gaming on this lappy since it'll be my work laptop. I'll have to carry it around as well, from campus to campus as I am a student as well.

THoughts? Also, on the warranty front, is there anything that would stop me from buying ram for say crucial, installing it, and if there was a warranty problem I could just remove it right? No voiding there right? Same thing with the harddrive. Is the 60gb harddrive listed as an upgrade a 7200rpm? Otherwise I'm thinking about purchasing that myself and installing it.

Basically, on any of these systems, I could afford to get say 512 from crucial and the 7200 60gb from newegg.

Buutt, which system is the best? Should I jsut shoot for the middle and get a mix of power and portability with the 600m? However, the 8600 and the 700m have firewire. Ugghh.

From what I have read, the 8600 is probably too heavy for carrying it around a lot, and if you don't need the big screen I'd definitely go with one of the others. If you are just coding, writing and surfing, you don't need firewire.

I have heard a lot of people buying with one stick of 256 RAM and then adding a 512 stick later for <$100. Gives you pretty cheap 768mb of memory.

I don't know if this voids the warranty or not - your best bet is to call Dell and ask them specifically when you order (record the conversation and get the rep's name, too!).

From what you described, I'd go with:
    Dell 600m
Pentium M 725, XGA or SXGA+ graphics (depending on your eyes)
64mb video (unless you aren't going to watch DVDs, then 32mb)
XP Pro if you are planning on joining a domain
256mb RAM (you can upgrade yourself cheaper)
40Gb HD (same price as 30Gb and you are swapping it anyway)
    24X CD-RW/DVD
    Intel 2200 wireless
3 year warranty (unless you are going to void it)

Gettin a Dell's rep name and everything does no good..trust me

The 25% off they had before .... I called talked to Brenda Robertson she told me that it was good until Thursday at 11pm ....

I called back Thursday at 10am said it was expired they would NOT honor it..
infact the rep told me his managers exact words..

"Just let this one go its not worth wasting your time to talk to a customer that wants an expired coupon code to work"

I was on the phone for over 2 hours with 4 different people and they would NOT honor it..

so ended up getting a cheaper 8600 with the 500 dollars off and gonna buy my ram/HDD from elsewhere

anwyasy what Im saying is talking to a Dell Rep and getting them to say something and quote you does no good

Well, I ended up getting the 600m but with the base memory configuration.

So, I'm on the lookout for new memory. I've been scoping out the deals at newegg.com and it seems that the price differential is really small between PC2100/PC2700/PC3200. Now I know that the 600m will clock everything down to PC2100 speeds but can I run the PC2700/PC3200 512 Dimms in the 600m?

    LMK!

Can anyone tell me how the screen is on the Dell 600m with the sxga+ screen in terms of brightness and contrast. How does it compare to the new Xbrite type screens?
