Hi,
I am trying to make a copy of my ghost partition (the hidden partition that restores everything back to original-factory settings) before wiping the hard drive.
Anyways, I followed the instructions aon goodells.net, but I'm stuck.
Here is what I've done so far:
- Obtain the ptedit32.exe and expose the restore partition.
Here's where I have trouble:
"Copy the following files from the restore partition to DVD:
bin\mouse.exe, bin\recover.exe, img\fi.gho, and any img\fi00000*.ghs files. "
The problem is, I can't find bin\mouse.exe and bin\recover.exe.
When I go and burn those files, do I burn the other files, or are those not needed? Should I burn everything, since all the files on that partition fit on a DVD-R.
Oh, and can someone clarify this as well?
" If you should ever need to restore from this DVD, you would boot from a DOS boot disk that includes CD support (such as an
ordinary Win98 boot floppy), switch to the CD/DVD drive letter, load the mouse driver, then launch recover.exe. From here
you would manually guide recover.exe through the process of restoring the fi.gho image, just like Ghost 2003. "
How do I do this w/o a boot floppy? Is there like this ms-dos disc I can download or something?
If I ever restored from the dvd, will the Ctrl+F11 restore thing still work?
If not, how would you put it back.

WAIT A MINUTE. I have a copy of Norton Ghost 10 (retail copy). Can't I just press ctrl+F11, restore everything back to the way it was when I got it, and use Ghost 10 to make a copy of the current partition?
Then, I'll burn that image on a DVD and I can just delete every partition and when I need to restore to factory settings, I'll just put that disc I made back in. Will that work? If I make an image of the partition running on original factory configs, how big will the image be? That's the problem.
Otherwise, I'll have to go through goodells.net
------
Thanks a lot

Personally, I would go with the Ghost 10 option, but i'm not sure about the actual partitions. If you format and delete all the partitions, then try to restore back to an image that only has the factory size of XP on it, it might mess things up a bit. I don't have any experience with creating an image use goodell's method.
Personally, if you are going to reformat, I wouldn't worry about creating a back up of the restore partition. All of the software is included on the XP bundle discs. Any problems that might occur are generally easy to fix. If you are wanting something for backup, then I would format and once you get the laptop set to the way you like it - then make an backup of that.
