I just want to ask you guys, if you can tell me which software or junks i dont need from dell, or tell me how to delete? .... I dont have a great knowledge about computers just basic ones...however my roomate know more than me...but he is not very familiar with dell laptops, that is why he doesnt want to touch my laptop, because he is afraid to mess it up,,, so if you guys can give me a suggestions or advice, i would really appreciate it...ohhh yeah and also there is something on my laptop call CLI.EXE...that really bothers me, i dont know what the heck is that...but when i check on the task manager, it consumes my processor activity or memory and I always have to end the process(CLI.EXE)...so can you guys tell me What CLI.EXE is and what can i do with it??????

    thanks for all!

    We're geeks here.

We always say, "clean format and re-install the OS on that thang!"

Best thing would be to reinstall windows, however if you are not up to it then you can manually remove each program from loading. It is somewhat tedious but with a bit of patience it can be done.

If you have already tried uninstalling whatever unwanted applications from Add Remove Programs then You can start by going through process list (Task manager). If you type the exact name of a process in google (like CLI.EXE) you can find plenty of web sites with information about the process. Once you decide it is not needed, you can remove it from loading at startup. Type msconfig at run dialog, which will load up a window with multiple tabs, go to startup tab and untick whatever entries related to the unwanted process.

If you cant find an entry of an unwanted process in msconfig then you can manually search the harddrive for it and remove or rename it. However do this only if you are absolutely sure that the process is not needed (to be safe, don’t remove any executable that is placed inside Windows directory). Because if you remove a critical executable (like a system exe), you may screw-up the OS.

    Good luck

PS: With a clean installation, I get less than 30 processes (Including a very light weight Virus guard and messengers )

There's a really good and detailed guide posted by SG here, so you can refer to that. I'm also trying to to a clean format for my Dell 6400. I wouldn't say it's hard but make sure you know what you're doing, and if you have any question I'm sure others will gladly help out :)

You can use any brand of memory as long as it's compatible with your computer. You'll want DDR2 @533MHz probably.
