I have searched the net and didn't find the answer I wished for so I will ask here.

I am planning to hook up my laptop to an monitor and use it as my primary monitor, so i will have the laptop lid closed and the lcd on the laptop shut off. So my question is that will I damage my lcd? Yes I am planning using intense programs such as games and video editing.

Also I have a Dell XPS 1530, so that shows how hot the laptop can get.

    Thank you.

I do this probably 70% of the time my laptop is in use and it has never caused me any problems.

Get a DVI to VGA connector, plug the monitor in, get the appropriate drivers if applicable, switch using the appropriate hotkey (on my m1710 it's fn+F8), and enjoy the larger screen!

The computers are designed for such switching in the BIOS and in key function. You should have no problems doing this and enjoying the larger screen.
