If i buy a vostro 1400 with the Truelife screen 1440 x 900 (or whatever it is), can i downgrade it to 1280 x 800 and if so will be look like an original 1280x800 screen or will it look rubbish?

a screen is best in its native resolution, but im pretty sure you can downgrade it but i doubt it would be as good as a native screen. Not 100% tho.

No, you can downgrade it yourself.
Is just that the screen you have is compatible with a bigger resolution while the smaller resolution ones are not.

    in another words -

your 1440x900 screen can go 1440x900 and 1280x800 and some other ones
however, the 1280x800 screen cannot go 1440x900, it can only go smaller.

    get it?

Yh i get it but will the 1440x900 screen look rubbish at the 1280x800 mode since it was made for 1440x900 resolutions?

It won't look like rubbish in the lower resolution mode, just not quite as sharp.

Also, it shouldn't affect gaming performance negatively either compared to a screen with the lower resolution as it's native resolution, but games too will not be quite as sharp.

Looks like rubbish is a bit subjective, but I think it's safe to say it won't look as good.

If you ask me the difference isn't very big. Once you start using the non-native resolution for a bit you won't even notice.

manzi: 1440 resolution is awesome on a 14" screen, I wouldn't want it to be any lower.

However, if it bothers you, you can always increase DPI at that resolution. Or if you're worried about for browsing, you can always increase the text size in the browser and it will still be just as sharp, just bigger.

Thx for the help. So let me sum this up:

There will ofcourse be a difference between using 1440x900 and 1280x800 resolutions, but when the 1440x900 screen is set to 1280x800 it wont be as sharp as a screen that was originally made for 1280x800.

    Am i correct?

Yes that's correct. Some panels are better at displaying non-native resolutions than others. It's pretty much luck of the draw which panel you get though.
