Any suggestions on applications that can read fan speeds and temps for the hardware in the Inspiron 17R SE?

    Hi,

There are no applications from Dell. You may be able to find few third party applications. Dell doesn’t recommend such utilities though. Also I am not sure about the accuracy of those applications.

    Thanks and Regards

There are a lot of programs that will read temps: HWMonitor, HWInfo, etc. Sometimes these will read fan speeds, but I dunno about the 7720 in particular. You can also try i8kfangui (though it definitely won't control the fans) or SpeedFan.

dell doesn't recommend monitoring system performance? really? can i quote you on that? (btw hashing has no effect on this board, in fact it makes searching for content less accurate.)

try HWiNFO, OP. i've found it to be the most comprehensive monitoring utility.

I downloaded Speedfan and it can't detect any fans for the 17R SE. Hmm. I should try the other programs.

EDIT: I restarted my computer and re-ran Speedfan and I see an entry for a fan now. I had to check the "Enable DELL support" box by clicking Configure -> Options tab.

EDIT2: Only problem with Speedfan so far is that when it is running in the background and you are watching streaming video, you get a constant stuttering/buzzing noise which is annoying and forces me to turn it off. It must be some sort of bug when its reading the hardware sensors that is causing this. I googled this and others are getting the same thing.

Well there only is one fan in the whole system, and you do hear what it's doing pretty well... just curious, why do you need to monitor what the fan is up to? I get that it's useful to keep an eye on temperatures, and monitoring fans in a custom build PC case where you're trying to nail a good airflow, but in a laptop with one fan, which can't be controlled in any way, I don't see the point...?
