I bought a E1705 today from the outlet. It was a great deal IMO, with the only thing that I wish it had was a 72k hard drive. I called to upgrade it and they said no, I called to buy another hard drive for it and they gave a price of $237.45...no way. Great ones at Newegg.com for much less. They said if I buy their hard drive it does not void the warranty, but if I buy one elsewhere and install it, it voids the warranty.

I threatened to cancel the sale, but really have been looking there and have not seen such a good deal... here it is...

Inspiron 9400/E1705 Notebook: Intel Core Duo Processor T2400 (1.83GHz/667MHz FSB) Genuine Windows XP Pro 1 $939.00

    Certified Refurbished

    1 GB DDR2 SDRAM 533MHz (2 DIMMs)

    Bluetooth Wireless Card

    6 Cell Primary Battery

    Genuine Windows XP Pro

80 GB EIDE Hard Drive (5400 RPM)

17 inch UltraSharp Wide Screen XGA+ Notebook Screen

    Intel Pro Wireless 3945

8x DVD +/- RW w/dbl layer write capability

    90W AC Adapter

256MB NVIDIA GeForce Go 7900 GS

    Insp E1705/9400 UPG: 2Yr Ltd Warranty, 2Yr OnSite Service and 2Yr HW Warranty Support $68.00 1 $68.00
    Subtotal: $1,007.00

So my question is...should I delete the extra year's warranty and buy another hard drive (voiding the warranty.)

Buy the dell hard drive and still have a pretty good deal

Buy another hard drive, swap it out, but keep the original in case I have to send the laptop back for repairs.

use the 54k hard drive. I did buy it for gaming, though.

Thanks for whatever help you can give me.

Oh, and I have spoken with several customer service folks at Dell, both on the phone and via chat.

All user upgradeable parts are meant to be upgraded. I wouldn't worry about your warranty getting voided. But since you and I am worrying about warranty, I would do it this way (I am looking for 7.2k HD myself).
Like you said, get your computer if everything checks out buy HD you want from newegg or any other sources and upgrade. And buy external casing for existing HD and use it as extra HD space. If somethng goes wrong swap the HD and send it back for repair.
This would be my way of thing. And I reeally thing for few bucks extra year of warranty is worth the price of $68.

By the way congrat on your new system!

don't worry about it because if you have to send in your computer for repair, you should take the HD out anyway before sending it in. that's step 1 for anybody that's getting their computer serviced.

Thanks. Off to newegg.com once I figure out the interface.
