I don't understand the reference to 200mb. If you are asking how can something 5gb make 100gb it is because the 5gb only knows that some of the disk has nothing useful in it so it need not store that and just writes nothing there, erasing what was there effectively killing erased files data.

Well it is a little confusing as to the real goal here but if you want to blast the thing to the state it was in when DELL shipped it. What I said will remove EVERYTHING deleted files everything. Like formatting and then installing again. It is not the way to go if you want to save ANYTHING.

The dell thing re-images the drive. Basically it is a snapshot of what the drive should look like after all of the installing is done. It doesn't ask any questions. It just writes all (in my case of 100gb drive) 80 or so gb with what was suppose to be there. It knows what empty space looks like and just writes "blank space", it great you don't need to care about anything. Now these things are fancy enough to do this to almost any size drive. Great when you get a new drive too (you need it on some media most places give you a dvd). I use this for notebooks I eBay.

Sorry Heart, I was having problems myself. I just had to reformat.
The 200mb at the top, you don't need to worry about.
I did by the Pro. There aren't that many differences between the two. I believe there is a comparison chart on their website.

Well I see I got caried away with my copying. Follow the second set of instructions in there
Using DELL PC restore.
I'll look amd see if I can figure out what you mean by 200mb.

Well I have no idea what the 200mb is and i am fairly sure it don't matter. These re-imaging things wipe the whole c disk, you can't really write annything to the rest of the partitions anyway. These re-image things are what all industries use. Dell every where. There is a reason that places like where I work buy lots of machines the same, it's because they install all of the stuff once, make an image and then when the pc gets smoked somehow re-image it and you are back to where you started. QA groups use this to restore the PC they are testing on to a pristine state. It wipes EVERYTHING!!!!!!!!!!! I am assuming the CIA isn't after you so the 3x wipe seems like something out of some crime novel to me. There really isn't anything a normal mortal can do to get a sector back from a disk after it is written to.
Run it, box it, as the guy on tv says Bye Bye

<blockquote id='quote'> quote:<hr height='1' noshade id='quote'>If you reinstall Windows XP with less than 200 MB of free hard-disk space available, System Restore is automatically disabled. <hr height='1' noshade id='quote'></font id='quote'></blockquote id='quote'>
That statement is for computers that don't have much space left on their hard drives. The minimum amount that system restore uses is 200mb. Besides, the instructions were to turn off the system restore. Either way, since you just got this pc, you'll have plenty of room.
I found the comparison chart. For me, the pro is good for file shredding and the cleaning free disk space.

Yass,
I personally would like to thank you for those easy instructions. I'm going to do it the other way (JJD's and my 1st thought) but I now want to try out the partial low level(I can't see the word Im looking for) format and I have to say I'm considering since the notebook's going back.
Mostly you gave me a chance, help easily understood and I hope you except my deep appreciation and help me in the future!
Thanx

I'm glad I could help. Besides, it gives me a chance to take a break from reconfiguring everything on my 9300 (my intel wireless card took a life of its own). Reconfiguring is such a pain. -

They both take alot of time, but their purposes are totally different. When you defrag, your fragemented files are being moved so your pc will run quicker and easier. It moves files closer together, so your pc doesn't have to search all over the HDD.
The cleaning free space is actually writing over the files you deleted. It fills your deleted files with zeros, ones, random numbers if you are using the custom settings, so that nobody can read your personal information (supposedly, not even the FBI). It likes what we were talking about a few posts ago with deleting/formatting. This will erase it from your harddrive where as formatting just hides it.
JDD does have a point. It makes me sound like I'm doing something illegal, but I'm not. I got the Pro for other reasons, and I didn't even realize the cleaning utility was there. I'm using the cleaning utility on my toshiba laptop that I'm selling for parts. On my 9300, I use the pro about once a day. I don't like the I.E. temp files and cache. I don't have it delete the cookies everyday.
If you want to run Pro without the cleaning utility, go to drive ops, and unselect the cleaning free space thing. You can use it once a month or just when you feel like.
Are you having any luck cleaning off your 9300?

I just got to impatient with it, and decided to reformat. I needed to anyways, but my network detector was doing something weird. I couldn't access my network at all, and my cpu resources were stuck at 100% unless I turned off my detector. No matter what I did, I couldn't get online.
I don't mind reformatting, but i hate installing all of my software again. -

that's weird. The only thing that i noticed on mine was after I had the cleaning utility complete, I had to go back and select everything to clean out my temp files and stuff. It did clean mine out.
We should be able to get it back to normal without restoring it (sorry for asking so many questions, but i need info in order to figure this out)
